How did they get here

Borussia Dortmund: The German team returns to the final for the first time since 2013 – also played at Wembley – after an unspectacular domestic campaign, but has emerged as something of a giant killer during the European season. Dortmund topped this season’s toughest Champions League group, losing 2-0 on the first day to Paris Saint-Germain but remaining unbeaten in their next five games and defeating AC Milan and Newcastle United along the way.

Edin Terzic’s side made easy work of themselves by beating PSV 3-1 on aggregate in the round of 16, and then truly developed a reputation for determination as the tournament progressed. They lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-final, suffering two defensive errors, but took advantage of a shaky opponent at home and emerged from the draw with a 5-4 aggregate win. solid form for the semi-final against PSG, blocking the high-level attack led by Kylian Mbappe and recording a 2-0 aggregate victory to reach the final.

Marcel Sabitzer has arguably been the team’s standout attacking force at Wembley, with five assists this season, more than any other player in the competition. Julian Brandt, meanwhile, is in the top five for chances created with 24 and Niclas Fullkrug is 11th in the Champions League for expected goals with 3.83 and leads the team with three goals in the competition this season.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has stood out in goal, especially in his performances against PSG.

Real Madrid: If Dortmund are the giant killers, then Real Madrid are the giants in this season’s competition. Despite any apparent weaknesses, Carlo Ancelotti’s side emerged victorious on every occasion and reached the final after an unbeaten season in Europe and just one defeat on the way to La Liga triumph. There is a sense of inevitability that it will arrive with them in London, considering how the available talent has saved them time and time again.

They topped a group with Napoli, Braga and Union Berlin with relative ease, but were wasteful at times in the lead and lacked precision in defense at other times. They still managed to outscore their opponents 16-7 in the group stage, but the margins of victory became increasingly narrow as the tournament progressed. They recorded just a 2-1 aggregate win over RB Leipzig in the round of 16, defeated defending champions Manchester City on penalties after a 4-4 aggregate score in the quarter-finals and then defeated Bayern Munich 4-3 in the semifinals.

Their ability to outplay their opponents time and time again was courtesy of a wide range of players, among them Jude Bellingham. He started his season on a high note with four goals in the group stage, but several other team-mates stood out, including Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Joselu, who each scored five goals in the Champions League this season. The final will also serve as a farewell to Toni Kroos, who will retire after the European Championship as one of the best midfielders of his generation. The 34-year-old’s play has not declined much despite being in the final stages of his career, which has seen him average 95.1% passing accuracy in Europe this season.

Prediction

This final is Real Madrid’s to lose and considering the fact that their strengths far outweigh their weaknesses, it looks likely that they will clinch their record 15th Champions League title on Saturday. However, don’t expect Dortmund to simply fold, especially against a Real Madrid defense that tends to concede goals. Choice: Borussia Dortmund 1, Real Madrid 3
