Here’s what Dolphins’ Raheem Mostert says needs to happen for Miami to break decades-long playoff win drought

The Miami Dolphins have had some solid teams in recent years, but they just can’t put together a playoff run. Their last five playoff appearances have all been completed, exiting in the wild card round. Their most recent first-round loss came last year, when they lost 26-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Their last playoff win was in 2000, and they haven’t advanced beyond the divisional round since 1985. It’s safe to say the playoffs haven’t been a good time for Miami.

The Dolphins are looking for a different result this season and believe they have what it takes to reverse this first-round playoff curse.

Running back Raheem Mostert knows that all that matters is how a team plays under the brightest lights. While some players like to leave the past behind, he chooses to use the past as motivation to change the team’s narrative.

“We are an excellent team and it just needs to work out at the end of the year,” Mostert said (via NFL.com). “I was telling reporters, man, I was going to start 0-8 to get to the playoffs, right, and try to get to the championship round. One of our biggest kryptonites has always been that first round. we are going to be criticized this year. People will say all these different types of things, but we can’t make excuses.

The Dolphins and Buffalo Bills finished 11-6 last year, but the Bills finished with the division title. Miami had a real chance to win its first AFC title since 2008, but couldn’t close it out in the end, losing three of its last five games. With the division on the line in Week 18, they were unable to defeat the Bills, handing them the division crown.

Ending the year with two losses and therefore getting a lower seed did not help prepare them for playoff success. This notion of not being able to finish strong is something Mostert and the Dolphins are familiar with and are working to change this season.

Mostert emphasized the need to make this a team effort, with no individual being greater than the objective.

“We have to go out here and finish the season and finish strong, the same way we started it, and just go out here and take care of business,” Mostert said. “Everyone has to be on the same page. We have to be one, right? That’s all it takes. Nothing bigger, nothing smaller. Just go out there and get healthy and finish.”

The Dolphins currently have the second-lowest odds (+190) to win the AFC East next season, behind only the New England Patriots, who are not single-game favorites next year (via Caesar’s Sports Betting). Their odds of making the playoffs are -155, with +130 odds of missing the playoffs.
