Mets reliever Jorge López rips own team as worst in ‘whole f—-ing MLB’ as glove-throwing tirade leads to DFA

The New York Mets intend to assign reliever Jorge López to assignment after a busy Wednesday as part of a 10-3 loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers (box score), according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. He surrendered a home run to Shohei Ohtani; threw his glove into the crowd after an ejection; and then, during a postgame interview, he expressed no regret for his actions by saying the Mets were “the worst team probably in the whole fucking MLB.”

López’s problems began when he relieved Adam Ottavino in the top of the eighth inning. He later surrendered a double to Miguel Vargas and induced a fly out from Mookie Betts before giving up a home run to Ohtani that made the score 9-3. López thought he generated a hit from Freddie Freeman that would have made the count 2-2; instead, third base umpire Ramon De Jesus insisted that Freeman had held out, giving him a 3–1 lead in the count.

López and De Jesus then barked at each other, resulting in De Jesus ejecting López from the game. Predictably, López did not take this decision well. Upon leaving the field, he threw his glove over the net that protects the crowd from foul balls:

After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza called López’s actions “not acceptable” and said that they would be handled internally. López, in turn, said that he did not regret having thrown the glove to the crowd. He then cast doubt on whether or not he will remain on the roster. “I’m ready to come back tomorrow if they want me be here,” he said.

When SNY sideline reporter Steve Gelbs asked López to clarify that he intended to call the Mets the worst team in the majors, the pitcher responded by saying, “yeah, probably.” He added that he felt his teammates seemed embarrassed by his actions. (López later explained that he meant he looked like the worst teammate on the worst team, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.)

López, 31, entered Wednesday with a 3.12 ERA (122 ERA+) and a 1.90 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his first 26 innings this season. It’s worth noting that he also had a tough game on Tuesday, yielding three runs (two of them earned) in one inning of work against the Dodgers. He suffered defeat in that decision, his second of the year. By the way, the Mets have now lost three straight games and eight of their last nine. After Wednesday’s loss, they are 22-33 on the year, which puts them fourth in the National League East.

It’s easy to understand, then, why López might be feeling frustrated with his and his team’s performance in recent days. Unfortunately for him, he may have more reason to feel irritated on Thursday.
