2024 U.S. Women’s Open: Nelly Korda posts career-worst 80 to open play at major championship

As soon as Nelly Korda’s 2024 US Women’s Open began, it was all over. The world No. 1 signed with a 10-over 80 to open play Thursday at Lancaster Country Club, the highest round par of her LPGA career. As such, she effectively managed to exit the championship.

The round marks Korda’s second straight 80 at the U.S. Open, as she finished last year’s championship at Pebble Beach with an 8-over 80. And it really was over just a few holes after it began on Thursday.

Korda’s day started so-so with a bogey on his first hole, the par-4 10th, and a par on the next. Then she stepped off the tee on the difficult downhill par-3 12th and drove the ball away from the green. Having initially skirted the water hazard in front of the green, Korda may have thought the strongest shot into the hole was out of the way, but he was just getting started.

Her second bunker on the back green side met the water on the other side of the front pin location and forced her to relieve herself from an uncomfortable position. Needing to land in front of the green but on the other side of the misfortune, Korda sank his championship chances by hitting not one but two more balls into the water on the way down. Finally hitting his eighth shot on the green, Korda two-putted for his 10.

“I mean, I don’t have a lot of positive thoughts, honestly,” Korda said. “Honestly, I didn’t play well today. I didn’t hit it well. I found myself in trouble a lot of times. Making a 10 on a par 3 definitely won’t do any good at the US Open. I started off really bad, but I played really well on the last nine, but Overall, yes, it was just a bad day at the office.”

The rest of Korda’s round was in line with what the rest of the field was doing as she completed 10-under 45 after making a few more bogeys on her outer half. A birdie finally came on the par-4 3rd to take her to 9 on the day before a topsy-turvy finish that included two bogeys, two birdies and a final bogey on the par-4 9th secured her 10-over 80.

“Yeah, I really didn’t want to shoot 80 and I kept making bogeys,” Korda said. “My last two rounds at the U.S. Women’s Open haven’t been good. I finished Sunday at Pebble, I think I shot 81, and today I shot 80. I’m human. I’m going to have bad days. I’ve played some really solid golf so far. Today was just a bad day.

Not only will Korda’s seventh victory of the season and third major championship triumph not be in store this weekend, but also his presence unless something serious happens in the second round. With top 60 and ties at the halfway point, Korda could score a moral victory if he somehow manages to get into that magical number.
