Search underway for Michael Mosley, TV presenter and doctor who is missing after going for walk in Greece

A major search and rescue operation underway on the Greek island of Symi has not yet located British doctor and television presenter Michael Mosley, who went missing on Wednesday afternoon after reportedly going for a walk, Greek says the police.

The coast guard, police and fire department were involved in the search, with a helicopter, drones and a police sniffer dog, police said Friday. They found no trace of the 67-year-old man who was vacationing on the island.

The search focused on the area between Agios Nikolaos, the coastal area from which Mosely apparently set out on his walk, and the island’s main town, Symi. Authorities also investigated whether he might have left the island, but found no indication that anyone had traveled on his behalf.

The Reuters news agency reports that Mosley’s cell phone was not with him.

“Probably he fell into the sea and was washed away, or something else happened,” Symi mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas told the news agency.

Police were also investigating reports that he spoke to local residents during his walk.

Mosley is well known in Britain for his regular appearances on television and radio and for his column in the Daily Mail newspaper. He is known outside the UK for his 2013 book “The Fast Diet”, which he co-authored with journalist Mimi Spencer. The “5:2 diet” lays out how people can lose weight quickly by minimizing calorie intake two days a week and eating healthily the other five.

He later introduced the Fast 800 diet, a fast diet weight loss program and has made several films about diet and exercise.

Mosley often pushed his body to extremes to see the effects of his diets and also lived with tapeworms in his gut for six weeks for the BBC documentary “Infested! Living With Parasites.”

Concerned friends and colleagues expressed their shock at Mosley’s disappearance.

“This shocking news focuses our minds on Michael’s wife, Clare, and his children,” said Roy Taylor, professor of medicine and metabolism at Newcastle University, who co-authored “The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet” with Mosley. “Our thoughts are with them at this terrible time of uncertainty, hoping he is found safe.”

Britain’s Foreign Office said it was in contact with Greek authorities during the search.

Mosley was nominated for a 2022 Emmy for his role as executive producer on the BBC science documentary “The Human Face,” which was hosted by Monty Python star John Cleese and featured a host of famous faces including Elizabeth Hurley, Pierce Brosnan and David Attenborough. .

Mosley has four children with his wife Clare Bailey Mosley, who is also a doctor, author and health columnist.
