WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump said he “understands” how President Joe Biden feels dealing with a loved one struggling with addiction, as both men avoided alcohol their entire lives because of their family ties to substance abuse.
“I understand this whole thing, I understand it very well,” Trump said on Thursday. interview with Fox News. “I’ve had enough of people who have this in their families.”
“It’s a difficult time for their family. It’s a difficult time for any family involved in this,” Trump added.
Trump has previously stated that he never drank alcohol, having witnessed his older brother Fred’s lifelong battle with alcoholism, which ultimately led to his death at age 42.
“I had a brother, Fred. Nice guy, better looking guy, better personality – much better than mine – but he had a problem,” Trump said in 2017 during a Event at the White House aimed at tackling the opioid crisis. “He had an alcohol problem. And he would tell me, ‘Don’t drink.’ And to this day I’ve never drunk. And I don’t miss that. I have no interest in that.”
On the other hand, although President Biden’s only surviving son, Hunter Biden, has a history of relentless alcohol and crack cocaine abuse, the president — who rarely discusses his abstinence — once joked about “not really being Irish” because he “never had a drink. The president also acknowledged in 2008 that there are “enough alcoholics in my family.”
Earlier this week in Delaware, Hunter Biden was found guilty on all three counts related to lying about his drug use while applying to buy a gun in 2018. Hunter Biden had falsely checked a box by claiming he was not a user of or addicted to any controlled substance. The decision marks the first time in US history that the son of a sitting president has been convicted of a crime.
After the verdict, President Biden told reporters he was “extremely proud” of his son and accepted the outcome of the case.
“I am extremely proud of my son Hunter. He overcame an addiction. He is one of the brightest and most decent men I know,” President Biden said Thursday at the G7 Summit in Italy. “I am convinced that I will do nothing – I said I would comply with the jury’s decision and I will do that. And I won’t forgive him.
President Biden also reaffirmed that he would not use his authority to commute his son’s sentence.
