Recreational boaters off the coast of the Florida Keys found 65 kilograms of cocaine floating in the ocean, authorities said this week, marking yet another recent drug discovery in U.S. waters and coasts.
Samuel Briggs II, acting chief agent for the U.S. Border Patrol, said the cocaine has an estimated street value of more than $1 million. Briggs video posted on social media Monday night, showing the wrapped packages of cocaine being wheeled away on a cart.
In a separate post on social media, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said “sailors on a private vessel found a package containing approximately 21 individually wrapped kilograms of suspected cocaine.” Authorities said the drugs, found in the water about 7 miles (11 kilometers) off Islamorada, Florida, on Saturday, were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Earlier this month, divers found 25 kg of cocaine in about 30 meters of water in Key West. Images released by the sheriff’s office showed packaging marked “Nike SB,” with imitations of the footwear brand’s iconic swoosh logo on the front. The following day, the same amount of suspected cocaine was found in Dolphin Island, Alabama.
Last month, a beachgoer found nearly $1 million worth of cocaine along the Florida Keys, CBS News Miami reported. U.S. Border Patrol agents said the package contained 65 kilograms of cocaine.
Drug traffickers routinely transport cocaine across the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico using a variety of ships – and sometimes the packages are marked with distinctive designs.
In January, the Colombian navy seized a so-called drug trafficking loaded with more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine in the Pacific Ocean, and many of the packages featured a insignia of a scorpion.
In 2023, packages of cocaine are worth more than US$100,000 washed out on several beaches in Florida. Each package was branded with a different design, including one that appeared to mimic the Chanel logo.
Also last year, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor during a fishing trip with her family caught 70 kilos of cocaine. Those bricks of narcotics were printed with butterfly designs.
Colombia produces around 60% of the cocaine found in the world.
