A repeat of the Euro 2020 semi-final lies ahead for Denmark and England, the former keen to avenge their defeat at Wembley three years ago and, in the process, secure their first victory of the tournament over the Three Lions. None of the three previous meetings in major competitions ended in victory for the Danes; in fact, Mikkel Damsgaard’s free-kick with which they took the lead in the last meeting was the first goal of the tournament that the Danes scored against England.

Goals were a precious commodity for both teams in their opening games, but England’s solitary goal proved enough to defeat Serbia just hours after Denmark had drawn 1-1 with Slovenia. Those results mean that another win for Gareth Southgate’s side would take them to the last 16 and could be enough to secure top spot. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Tuesday’s match:

Group C outlook

Both Denmark and England came away from their first games wondering whether more could have been done to truly dominate a game they were expected to win, even if the latter did exactly that. It was a more nervous game than necessary, with a pre-tournament favorite holding off Jude Bellingham’s goal for 80 minutes when he had the talent to do so much more. Even so, England already have experience in tournament football when it comes to forcing their way into games, trusting their defense to hold their ground.

Denmark have not been able to do that and will no doubt be reluctant to avoid a situation where they have to win their final game against Serbia having picked up just one point from their first two games. “We have to stick together,” said Kasper Schmeichel. “Whenever you play against a team with such quality, you have to be able to stick together, defend well and you have to take advantage of opportunities when they arise.”

Denmark: Simon Kjaer is in the running to feature, at least in some capacity, after missing the opening game with a thigh problem. “It’s looking better and better,” said coach Kasper Hjulmand. “He had two fantastic training sessions.” Joakim Maehle will hope to force his way into contention at full-back, while Youssuf Poulsen’s physicality could ask questions of Marc Guehi and John Stones that Jonas Wind wouldn’t.
