CDK Global, a company that provides software for sales management and other services to car dealerships in the US, was hacked, leading the company to temporarily shut down most of its systems.

This is effectively preventing around 15,000 car dealerships from making sales.

“We are actively investigating a cyber incident,” a company spokesperson told CBS News. “Out of an abundance of caution and concern for our customers, we have shut down most of our systems and are working diligently to get everything up and running as quickly as possible.”

Late Thursday afternoon, CDK said that after running tests and consulting with third-party experts, some of its systems were back working.

“With the work done so far, our core [dealer management system] and Digital Retail solutions were restored. We continue to perform extensive testing on all other apps and will provide updates as we bring these apps back online,” CDK said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch.

The company’s dealer management system, or DMS, is a hub that allows companies to monitor operations from a single interface, while its retail tools allow dealerships to conduct transactions online and in showrooms.

What is CDK?

CDK provides dealerships with tools to manage payroll, inventory and office operations.

On its website, it also touts its cybersecurity capabilities. “CDK cybersecurity solutions provide a three-tier cybersecurity strategy to prevent, protect and respond to cyberattacks so you can defend your dealership,” it states.

When did the cyber attack start?

The cyber attack on CDK Global began on Tuesday night, Computer beepa cybersecurity news site reported Wednesday, taking the 15,000 car dealerships it serves offline.

It is currently unknown who or what group is behind the cyber attack.

How are dealerships responding?

Some utilities appeared to get creative to continue doing business during the disruption. Utility employees posted about the outage on Reddit Wednesday, sharing that they relied on spreadsheets and post-its to sell small parts to customers and make repairs, but that they weren’t making large transactions.

One employee asked other dealership employees, “How many of you are sitting idle because your entire store runs on CDK?” under the heading “CDK Disabled,” with users in Wisconsin and Colorado confirming that their dealership transaction systems were offline.
