U.S. sanctions top Mexican cartel leaders, including alleged assassin known as “The Doctor”


U.S. authorities on Thursday announced economic sanctions against eight targets affiliated with the Mexican drug cartel, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, accused of fentanyl trafficking and human smuggling.

U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) the measures aim to in choking off a network known for shipping illicit drugs from Mexico across the U.S. southern border to Dallas and Houston, as well as other cities including Chicago and Atlanta, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

“The leaders we target have committed heinous acts, from controlling drug routes, to gun trafficking, to money laundering and murder,” Yellen said, according to prepared remarks ahead of an event in Atlanta.

“Our sanctions will cut off illicit money from cartel leaders and make it harder for them to bring deadly fentanyl to our streets.”

The target of sanctions organization leadersas well as key lieutenants who Treasury said were significantly involved in and promoted the illicit drug trade.

Among the leaders targeted is an alleged assassin named Uriel Tabares Martinez. According to the Treasury Department, he is known as “El Medico” (“The Doctor”) for the violent and surgical way in which he torture and kills those who oppose high-ranking members of the cartel.

The group is also known for human smuggling, with La Nueva Familia Michoacana showing videos in which participants falsely claim they are under interrogation to obtain asylum in the US. Participants then pay money to the cartel, authorities said in a statement.

“La Nueva Familia Michoacana is one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent cartels and has become a priority focus for the Mexican government in recent years,” the Treasury Department said in announcing the sanctions.

Last year, the cartel was accused of suspected leaving a severed human leg found hanging from a pedestrian bridge on Wednesday in Toluca, west of Mexico City. On the bridge, the body’s trunk was left on the street below, close to the city center, along with handwritten plaques signed by the Michoacana Family.

In 2022, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions on the Michoacana Familyaccusing the cartel of manufacturing “rainbow” fentanyl pills allegedly intended for children.

In addition to OFAC’s actions, the U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network issued an alert on warning signs and trends designed to help U.S. financial institutions detect signs of the illicit fentanyl supply chain.

“The opioid crisis, and especially the rise of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, has devastated communities and claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans,” Secretary Yellen said in a statement. declaration Thursday. “Treasury has unique capabilities and expertise to target the financial flows of these cartels that are poisoning our communities, and going after them is a top priority for me and the Department.”
