The Australian Olympic Committee has selected its 41-member swimming team to represent them in the Olympic pool. Paris Olympicsand singer Cody Simpson was not selected.
The 27-year-old international pop star put her Music career on hold to return to poopI. He said on Saturday that he will return to the entertainment industry after failing to make the Australian national team.
“It’s bittersweet,” Simpson told reporters after the Olympic trials in Brisbane. “But I did what I could – and that’s all you can do.”
Simpson finished fifth in the 100-meter butterfly at the trials. He swam at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, and won the gold medal as a heat swimmer on the winning Australian 400 meter freestyle relay team.
The singer was a promising junior swimmer before he was discovered by an American music manager in 2009. He returned to the pool four years ago looking to represent Australia on the biggest stage.
Before the Olympic Trials, he shared a post on social media reflecting on the journey.
“It seems like just yesterday it was 2020, getting back into the water raw and totally unfit, having not swum or competed since I was a boy. Looking back and seeing how this has all progressed is beyond me,” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me on my journey. I do all this for the 12-year-old in me. He would be so happy to know everything that happened. I think so, because he is me! See you on the other side! “
His mother, Angie, and father, Brad, swam for Australia at the 1987 Pan-Pacific Games and 1994 Commonwealth Games, respectively.
The team representing Australia includes Cameron McEvoy and Bronte Campbell, who will be playing their fourth game. Also includes Ariarne Titmus, who established a world record in the 200-meter freestyle on Wednesday at the Olympic Trials.
Another swimmer who didn’t pass was Cate Campbell. The four-time gold medalist failed in her bid to become the first Australian to swim in five Olympics.
“I can get out of the pool with my head held high,” Campbell said. “I came back to try something no one has done before.”
Campbell, 32, finished seventh in the women’s 50m freestyle on Saturday night in Brisbane. Only the top two finishers – Shayna Jack and Meg Harris – will compete in the event at the Paris Games from July 26th.
