New York Gov. Kathy Hochul adds  million to local police budgets



ALBANY, NY (NEXSTAR) – Compared to last year, shootings that resulted in injuries it decreased 28% from January to May, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul. Her office reported the statistic supported by data from police departments from the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative.

This 28% represents 218 shootings in the first five months of 2024, compared to 303 shootings in the same period in 2023. Police data adds that the number of shooting victims has fallen by 24%, from 360 victims between January and May 2023 to 272 victims between January and May 2024.

“Even with crime trending downward, we struggle to maintain unprecedented levels of funding for prevention of armed violence in our most recent budget,” Hochul said when highlighting these numbers. “For the second year in a row, we are investing an additional $36 million in the GIVE program, which will support 28 additional agencies in New York.”

Hochul’s office said the record-level funding — $36.19 million — will combat violent crime and save lives. Minus $262,089 available as needed as issues arise, check out the breakdown by county:

SafeHome.org also released recent gun control statistics. The group said that even though gun sales have grown by about 20% nationwide over the past 10 years, sales have declined by 4% between 2022 and 2023. And during that single year in New York, SafeHome.org said that Gun sales fell 15%, among the biggest declines in the country. Only Washington, D.C., Delaware and Louisiana had as good or better results.

Not only did the Empire State have one of the biggest drops in sales, it also had one of the lowest total gun sales. Only New Jersey, Nebraska and D.C. had similarly low numbers in 2023. The SafeHome.org report said Texas, Florida and California sold more guns, while people in Montana, Wyoming and Alaska bought guns at about seven times the rate. from New York.

Safehome.org called highly publicized incidents of gun violence and increasing red flag laws, background checks, and contribution advocacy for lower numbers in New York. The website said that in 2023, 226 guns were sold for every 10,000 New Yorkers over the age of 21. And so far in 2024, New Yorkers have purchased about 106,651 guns, they said.

State police have also seized 973 guns so far in 2024, and Hochul said he thinks they will surpass last year’s total of 1,463.
