With less than five months until the general electionsPresident Biden announced sweeping federal action This will give undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens who have lived in the United States for at least 10 years a new path to permanent residency and, over time, legal citizenship. The plan could not only bring citizenship to about 500,000 eligible spouses, but also about 50,000 children, while protecting them from deportation.
“It’s important for communities to really see that the president is fighting for issues that are important to them and their families,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez said in an exclusive interview with CBS News.
“Families eligible for this new executive order will be able to sleep easier tonight, knowing they have the opportunity to help ensure they are not separated by cruel policies, perhaps they will be able to cuddle a little. a little more united, knowing that they can stay together as a whole family here in this country as a result of this executive order,” she said.
Rodríguez also drew a contrast between the actions taken by the Biden administration and those of former President Donald Trump. She told CBS News political director Fin Gomez, “It’s also a stark reminder of the extremely cruel and chaotic family separation policies we’ve seen under Donald Trump’s administration,” adding, “I think we can all remember those images of babies literally crying, being torn from their mothers’ arms.”
Meanwhile, in Racine, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, Trump shot down Biden’s new immigration policy. “One of Crooked Joe’s most destructive actions yet is his lawless executive action,” Trump said, vowing to undo it if he is elected in November.
“He will formally grant a mass amnesty to millions of illegal aliens who have entered our country,” Trump falsely claimed, adding, “I think many of them will vote for me.”
Biden attracted a majority of Latino voters in 2020, but Trump continues to make gains in the community. According to a CBS News Poll Since the beginning of this year, Biden’s support among Latino voters has dropped 12 points since 2020.
While Trump is unlikely to win a majority of the Latino vote in November, some of his allies told CBS News they believe a Hispanic vice presidential running mate could help pull Latino support from the margins and help win swing states like Nevada and Arizona, which both have a large Latino electorate. CBS News previously reported that Senator Marco Rubio of Florida rose to the top of List of candidates for Trump’s running matealong with several other Republicans.
Still, Rodríguez says she’s not worried about the potential impact of a Latino vice presidential candidate like Rubio on the Republican ticket. “I don’t think there is an individual or, frankly — any speech or anything anyone can do, including Donald Trump or his campaign, that will — hide the fact that he despises my community.”
