(NewsNation) – Current President Joe Biden and former President Trump are expected to face each other in the first presidential debate of the 2024 elections scheduled for next Thursday.
Biden, a Democrat, will soon head to Camp David in Maryland, where he is expected to do much of the debate prep with his closest advisers. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign said he is not preparing for any debates — but behind the scenes, they are holding some meetings and reviewing policies to prepare him.
In recent weeks, Trump has also met with some of the people who would be on his list for vice president, including Republican senators JD Vance of Ohio and Marco Rubio of Florida.
RFK Jr. fails to qualify for debate
As Biden and Trump prepare to take the debate stage, another presidential candidate, independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will not be there.
CNN, which is hosting the debate, required all participants to appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to obtain the 270 electoral votes needed to win the election and receive at least 15% in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters. meet the “reporting standards” of the media.
NewsNation Partner, The Hill and Decision Desk headquarters reported that starting Wednesday, Kennedy will officially appear on the presidential ballot in five states, meaning he could potentially get 40 electoral votes. Only three polls approved by CNN had Kennedy at 15%.
The Kennedy campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission.
“We will not fail to defend America’s desire to have him on the debate stage,” Kennedy communications director Del Bigtree said in a statement. “We will emphasize this point until the end. And I hope that all entities, the Trump campaign and the Biden campaign, and CNN recognize that this is a violation of the FEC.”
Kennedy campaign workers say they have collected enough signatures for ballot access in 18 other states. However, these signatures still need to be verified, and a CNN spokesperson noted that “merely requesting access to the polls does not guarantee that (Kennedy) will appear on the ballot in any state.”
“Additionally, RFK Jr. does not currently meet our voting criteria, which, like the other objective criteria, were defined before debate invitations were issued,” the spokesperson said.
