North Carolina basketball recruiting: Transfer portal news, 2024 roster, recruits, targets from ACC experts

With six national titles, 21 Final Four appearances and 42 regular season ACC championships, the North Carolina Tar Heels are undoubtedly one of the top college basketball programs in the country. The Heels are coming off another strong season in which they won the ACC regular season championship, earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and made a trip to the Sweet 16. Coach Hubert Davis will return for most of last year’s lineup North Carolina basketball team and the Tar Heels appear poised to enter the 2024-25 college basketball season as one of the leading candidates to dethrone the UConn Huskies.

Davis’ most pressing need this offseason is finding a way to replace Armando Bacot’s production. The two-time All-American was one of the most productive players in college basketball history and a physically imposing presence in the paint. Will Davis turn to high school rankings or the college basketball transfer portal to replace Bacot? Although North Carolina returns RJ Davis and most of its 2023-24 roster, the Heels will still have to find a way to replace forward/center Armando Bacot. The two-time All-American leaves Chapel Hill as the program’s all-time leader in rebounds, games played and double-doubles. Bacot’s NBA Draft prospects remain unclear, but replacing his production in the front court will be a difficult task for Davis and his staff.

Another important departure for the Heels is Harrison Ingram. The 6-foot-1 forward transferred to UNC before last season after spending the first two years of his career at Stanford. Ingram averaged 12.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for the Tar Heels in 2023-24. Ingram could still opt to return to North Carolina, but the projected second-round pick has not yet been firmly announced. North Carolina Basketball News, Roster

With North Carolina returning most of its roster from last year, Davis and his staff only had a few scholarships available to work with. That didn’t stop the Heels from signing the ninth-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to 247Sports. So far, UNC has added three high school players and one player from the Transfer Portal.

The new talent is headlined by two five-star high school signees, guard Ian Jackson and forward Drake Powell. Jackson, ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in the country, is an explosive 6-foot-2 guard who has the ability to be an instant impact player on the defensive end of the floor. Powell, ranked 10th in the country, is also athletic and capable of making an impact on both ends of the court from day one in Chapel Hill.
