North Carolina basketball recruiting: Transfer portal news, 2024 roster, recruits, targets by top ACC experts

North Carolina is the only college basketball program to have an active streak of reaching the national championship for nine consecutive decades, and no other school has done so in more than six consecutive. The Tar Heels have already done it once this decade, losing to Kansas in the 2022 national title game. They missed the tournament in 2023 but bounced back with a Sweet 16 appearance last season. Coach Hubert Davis is now putting the finishing touches on his 2024-25 North Carolina basketball roster after the college basketball transfer window closed last week, with players still in the portal deciding their futures.

Davis was named ACC Coach of the Year last season, while senior guard RJ Davis won ACC Player of the Year. The star guard has already announced his decision to return to school for another season, helping to ease the pain of losing senior Armando Bacot. The loss of Bacot cannot be overstated, as he helped ease the UNC coaching transition from Roy Williams to Hubert Davis. He was a double-double machine throughout his five years on campus, but he wasn’t the only key piece who won’t return for the 2024-25 UNC basketball season. Cormac Ryan, a sixth-year senior last year who averaged 11.5 points per game, is also out of eligibility, while All-ACC selection Harrison Ingram is testing the NBA Draft waters. He will be able to return to UNC and will have until May 29 to withdraw his name from the project.

North Carolina pursued Tennessee’s Jonas Aidoo and Stanford’s Andrej Stojakovic in the portal, but they opted to take their talents elsewhere. It’s not all bad news for the Carolina faithful, however, as reigning ACC Player of the Year and first-team All-American RJ Davis plans to get it back. He will return for his fifth season at UNC and provide some continuity with the projection that UNC will lose three of its four leading scorers from last year’s team. North Carolina made big moves in the transfer portal last year, adding Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan, among others. The Tar Heels are replacing several key players again this offseason, but they have already signed Belmont wing Cade Tyson, who was one of the best shooters in the portal. They also hosted former Rutgers center Clifford Omoruyi for an official visit just days before being selected to their top four schools.

Omoruyi listed Georgetown, Kansas State and Alabama on his bottom four list ahead of his decision, which he plans to announce Sunday. North Carolina is bringing in two five-star recruits, guard Ian Jackson and forward Drake Powell. The Tar Heels only signed three players in the 2024 class, but that was still enough to be in the top 10 of the 247Sports rankings.
