Kentucky basketball under Mark Pope: Transfer portal news, 2024 roster, targets, recruits, top expert insight

The Kentucky Wildcats will usher in a new era when the 2024-25 college basketball season begins. After 15 seasons, John Calipari, who won a national title at Lexington and turned Kentucky into a recruiting juggernaut, left to become Arkansas’ new coach. UK replaced Calipari with Mark Pope, a standout guard on the Wildcats’ 1996 national championship team. Pope is coming off a successful five-year run at BYU that resulted in two NCAA Tournament appearances for the Cougars. When Pope arrived in Lexington, he was tasked with building a completely new Kentucky basketball roster after every scholarship player on Calipari’s final team graduated or transferred.

Pope and his staff have signed 10 players to date and have three remaining scholarships available for next season. If you love the Wildcats or just want the latest roster updates and news from the college basketball transfer portal, be sure to See what the proven team of experts is saying at CatsPause, the 247Sports affiliate covering Kentucky.

Kentucky Basketball Roster Matches

Pope had to hit the ground running when he was named Kentucky’s new head coach, as several members of last year’s Kentucky basketball roster left Lexington. Forward Zvonimir Ivisic is the first player to follow Calipari to Arkansas, and guard/forward Adou Thiero followed after playing his last two seasons under coach Cal. Aaron Bradshaw has joined Ohio State, and guard Joey Hart will be on the Ball State roster next season. Point guard DJ Wagner will follow Calipari to Arkansas.

Justin Edwards, Rob Dillingham and Ugonna Onyenso have made the final decision to declare for the Draft. Kentucky will also be without leading scorers Tre Mitchell and Antonio Reeves next season, as both players have graduated. Join CatsPause for the latest on all of Kentucky’s roster changes.

All but one member of Kentucky’s original 2024 recruiting class followed Calipari to Arkansas. The only player who remained with the Wildcats was Lyon County (KY) point guard Travis Perry. 247Sports lists Perry as a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 77 overall player for the 2024 recruiting cycle. Kentucky later added another local high school product, three-star small forward Trent Noah.

Most of Pope’s starting lineup at Kentucky came through the Transfer Portal. UK’s transfer class is headlined by former Oklahoma State center Brandon Garrison and former Oklahoma forward Otega Oweh. Garrison was a five-star prospect in the 2023 class and averaged 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in his lone season in Stillwater. Oweh played two seasons for the Sooners and is coming off a season in which he averaged 11.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Join CatsPause for the latest on all of Kentucky’s roster additions.
