They don’t hand out off-season championships in college football, but if they did, Ohio State would be #1 in every poll. After receiving a commitment from the best security experts of 2025 Faheem Delane Sunday, the Buckeyes are No. 1 in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.

Delane is a huge get for the Buckeyes and a player they have targeted at the top of the board for some time. He was originally offered by the Buckeyes in May 2022, when Perry Eliano was still the team’s safeties coach. After Tim Walton became the new secondary coach in Columbus, he picked up where Eliano left off with Delane, and his persistence paid off.

Delane is the highest-rated player in the state of Maryland and the No. 50 player in the class of 2025, according to 247Sports. As you’d expect from a top-tier talent at a premium position, Delane received offers from just about everyone. Oregon was seen as Ohio State’s main competitor, but Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Tennessee, LSU and every other blue blood program you can probably think of were after Delane.

O 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins scouting report:

An aggressive defender who can cover the pass, defend the run and get home on the blitz. He possesses a college-ready body, measuring about 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds the summer before his junior season. Quick to activate and tends to play with a lot of confidence. He has primarily been used as a box safety and slot corner at the prep level and has been very successful in both roles. Physical most of the time and always looking to land a blow. Useful in man-to-man situations and stood out at Under Armour’s annual Future event, producing some takeaways. However, he can lose track of wide receivers in the deep third and doesn’t have the foot speed to recover. He should be viewed as a potential impact player in the secondary for a Power Five program that can do a little bit of everything. He will likely be most successful in a defensive scheme that has him facing forward and constantly puts him in position to make plays. He has everything he needs to get on the field sooner or later, like his brother, who starred as a freshman at Virginia Tech.

The safety position is an important one in Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ defense — hence the reason the Buckeyes so aggressively pursued five-star transfer Caleb Downs — and Delane projects as the type of player who could contribute immediately in a limited period. role as a freshman before rising to No. 1 on the depth chart.

His addition to Ohio State’s class gives the Buckeyes 14 total commits in their 2025 class, all rated four stars or higher. It also pushes the Buckeyes past Notre Dame and into the No. 1 team rankings, despite Ohio State having seven fewer commits than the Fighting Irish.
