How do you follow an all-time great tournament? Well, the 2024 RBC Canadian Open is about to find out. Hamilton Golf & Country Club will host this year’s Canadian Open and has the unenviable task of playing off what may have been the best result of the 2023 season.

Last year, Nick Taylor became the first Canadian since 1964 to win his country’s Open, and he did so in the most dramatic fashion. Sinking a 72-foot eagle putt on the third hole of the playoff against Tommy Fleetwood, Taylor threw his putter in the air and immediately jumped into rarefied air when it comes to Canadian sporting tradition.

He will look to get back on track as several of his compatriots join the field, including Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Hadwin. You may remember Hadwin as the man approached by security during Taylor’s celebration, but it was Rory McIlroy who approached the field the last time the Canadian Open was held at Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

Shooting a final-round 61 where he flirted with the possibility of a sub-60 performance, McIlroy raced away from the field for a seven-stroke victory over Webb Simpson and Shane Lowry in 2019. The four-time major champion aims to get back into the winner’s circle for a third time in his Canadian Open career and claim his third trophy of the year as the summer months arrive.

While McIlroy is on his way to 30 PGA Tour victories, players like Fleetwood, Cameron Young and Maverick McNealy are still looking for their first. Fleetwood suffered a particularly painful defeat at the hands of Taylor last year and will be hoping to get back into contention, as will Young, who has already finished runner-up in 2024.

Sahith Theegala, Sam Burns and Lowry are all eyeing a return to the winner’s circle, with others such as Adam Scott, Tom Kim and Keith Mitchell all potentially contributing over the weekend in Canada.

2024 Canadian Open field, odds

  • Rory McIlroy (4-1): Post-Masters McIlroy is finding his groove. Winner in two of his last three matches, the Northern Irishman returns to a comfortable position on the calendar and will put his affinity for national openings to the test. Driving the golf ball perhaps better than ever, McIlroy can thank the increase in his iron game for the increase in hardware. While he didn’t break the decade-long major championship drought in Valhalla, he performed adequately and should be on the roster come Sunday night.
  • Tommy Fleetwood (16-1): It’s not a question of “if,” but “when” Fleetwood will achieve his long-awaited PGA Tour victory. Last year’s tournament had all the ingredients for this, as the Englishman was on the tee at the accessible par-5 18th, needing a birdie to secure victory in regulation. Unable to succeed, Fleetwood fell short once again and will look to make amends this week after a series of mixed results, highlighted by a podium at the Masters and a top-15 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship.
  • Corey Conners (20-1): The best Canadian on the board is doing everything we expect from Conners. One of the most accurate drivers on the PGA Tour and a lethal approach player, the 32-year-old needs a massive week with his short game if he is to contend. After missing five cuts in his first six Canadian Opens, Conner has established himself in his country’s Open, finishing sixth in 2022 and in the top 20 last year.
  • Sahith Theegala (20-1)
  • Shane Lowry (22-1): It was a memorable month for Lowry, as he notched his first PGA Tour victory since his Open triumph and added to the major championship record book with his third-round 63 at the PGA Championship. Fighting in Valhalla, the Irishman leaned on an exceptionally hot bat and it could be a sign of things to come this summer. He ranks third at this course in strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained approach over the past six months.
  • Sam Burns (22-1)
  • Cameron Young (22-1)
  • Alex Noren (22-1): The former top 10 player in the world is quietly playing some of the best golf on the PGA Tour. It’s been nearly three months since Noren finished outside the top 25 on a leaderboard highlighted by a podium at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and a T12 at the PGA Championship in his last start. He’s doing almost everything right, as he ranks third in total hits suffered in the last six months.
  • Maverick McNealy (30-1)
  • Adam Scott (30-1)
