Both of Scottie Scheffler’s major victories came at the Masters, but he was very successful at the US Open. Scheffler has a top-three finish the past two years and a consecutive top-three finish at the 2024 U.S. Open. No. 2 Pinehurst will host this year’s tournament, which begins Thursday, June 13, and ends on Father’s Day. Scheffler and his wife just welcomed their first child in May, so winning the 2024 US Open could mean a little more to him than any of his previous Masters victories.
The world’s No. 1 golfer also tops the 2024 US Open odds at 4-1, with Rory McIlroy (9-1) the only other golfer with single-digit odds. PGA champion Xander Schauffele is 10-1 in the 2024 US Open field, with defending US Open winner Wyndham Clark a long shot at 22-1. Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been on a roll since the PGA Tour restarted in June 2020. In fact, the model has won nearly $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, winning tournament after tournament.
McClure’s model correctly predicted that Scottie Scheffler would finish atop the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit +9,000, and throughout the tournament, McClure’s best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted that Jon Rahm would be victorious in the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model scored the second major victory of Rahm’s career over the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead in the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the model’s second consecutive victory at the Masters, which also guaranteed Scheffler’s victory in 2022.
This same model also nailed 12 majors heading into the weekend, including three consecutive Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who followed it saw massive returns.
Now with the US Open 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times and the results were surprising. Visit SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top US Open Predictions for 2024
A big surprise: Justin Thomas, with a 33-1 chance, has a good campaign for the title. He is a target for anyone looking for a big payday. Thomas’ first major debut came at Pinehurst at the 2014 US Open when he was 21 and qualified through a regional sectional. He didn’t even have a PGA Tour card and missed the cut at the major, but he also gained invaluable experience from the course. That should serve him well in this year’s tournament, as well as his solid performance this year on tour. In fact, he is 14th in the FedEx Cup standings after finishing 71st last season.
Thomas entered Memorial with three consecutive top-25 finishes, including two of them in the top-10. His (adjusted) scoring average ranks 11th on the PGA Tour, and only six golfers average more birdies per round than the two-time major winner. He is excelling in both the long and short games, ranking 19th in total driving efficiency and 10th in strokes gained: around the green. Given his previous great success and the rebound in his game this season, it is surprising that there are 14 golfers with shorter odds for the 2024 US Open, so Thomas is a bargain for PGA betting.
The model also examined where Scottie Scheffler ends up. Scheffler has already racked up four victories this season, which includes his second major championship at the Masters in April. Scheffler also finished atop the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Players Championship and RBC Heritage.
He has finished outside the top 10 just once this season and is coming off a T-2 at the Charles Schwab Challenge in his last start. He has managed to dominate his opponent thanks to his incredible ball striking. Scheffler enters the 2024 US Open ranked first in greens in regulation percentage (73.90%) and strokes gained: approach to green (1.348). He has also been effective on the green, ranking first in stroke average (1.664), 12th in strokes per round (28.00) and 19th in one-stroke percentage (43.38%).
