The third major championship of the 2024 golf season has arrived with two Americans already claiming the first two of the year. The USGA has packed its main event with nearly every top golfer in the world as 2024 U.S. Open contenders prepare this week to face No. 2 Pinehurst for the first time in a decade.
Scottie Scheffler enters yet another major as the favorite, this time coming off a noteworthy effort at the PGA Championship marred by an arrest for which all charges were dropped. Scheffler, who has already won the Masters and Players Championship this season, could very well have won the PGA if not for these unfortunate events. Instead, he enters Pinehurst, North Carolina, looking to get back into the winner’s circle.
Rory McIlroy is once again looking for a return to great glory. Xander Schauffele, having conquered the PGA to claim his first major (and first PGA Tour victory in nearly two years), will try to get the Americans to back-to-back national titles. This is after defending champion Wyndham Clark conquered the Los Angeles Country Club a year ago. Clark made some plays this season but missed the cut at the Masters and PGA; Still, he had top-three finishes for the year, including a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Jon Rahm was another potential candidate, but he Withdrew from US Open on Tuesday while dealing with a nagging foot injury.
Elsewhere, Tiger Woods enters the US Open on a sponsor exemption, having not been healthy enough to play in the tournament since 2020. He has not finished in the top 25 at a major since the 2019 US Open, failing to play during the weekend in four of the last five majors in which he played. And then there’s Phil Mickelson, who has lost three of the last four US Open qualifiers and hasn’t finished in the top 30 at this event since 2014. Lefty is still hoping to complete a career grand slam with those six US Open second-place finishes. continuing to haunt him.
