The third major championship of the 2024 golf season arrived at the weekend with two Americans already claiming the first two championships of the year. The USGA has packed its main event with nearly all of the world’s best golfers, as the 2024 US Open contenders face No. 2 Pinehurst for the first time in a decade.
Scottie Scheffler entered yet another major as the favorite, this time coming off a noteworthy effort at the PGA Championship marred by an arrest for which all charges were dropped. Scheffler, who has already won the Masters and Players Championship this season, could very well have won the PGA if not for these unfortunate events. Instead of competing at Pinehurst, however, he barely managed to pass and began to reevaluate his game after 36 holes of the US Open.
Rory McIlroy began Friday’s second round as one of the two leaders up front after shooting 65 at Pinehurst at the US Open. Yet he sits two shots ago The 36-hole solo leader is Ludvig Åberg, a 24-year-old Swede competing in the first major championship season of his career. Åberg continues an immense run that began in the last Ryder Cup; he shot 69 on Friday and played some of the best golf of anyone on the PGA Tour in the first three majors of the year, finishing second to Scheffler at the Masters this year.
While attending the US Open can be a lot of fun, simply being able to watch golf on the game’s biggest stage is an incredible pleasure each year. We here at CBS Sports are excited to bring you complete US Open coverage all week long.
