A busy three-week period on the PGA Tour comes to an end this week, with players traveling from North Carolina to Connecticut for the 2024 Travelers Championship. The second of two signature events for the third major championship of the year, the Travelers Championship will welcome 71 players to TPC River Highlands.

Notably absent is Rory McIlroy, who following his heartbreaking US Open defeat, decided to take some time off from the game ahead of his Scottish Open defense in three weeks. McIlroy’s omission will leave the door open for others to possibly claim the title, with the elephant in the room still being world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler experienced his worst result of the season at last week’s US Open, with just four birdies in four rounds and failing to break par once. He should be back to normal this week as he performed well last year en route to the top 10 and is looking for his sixth win of the season.

Someone who has already won on this golf course in his career is world number 2, Xander Schauffele. The PGA Championship winner finished in the top 10 at the US Open, making it eight consecutive first-place finishes to start his career at that particular championship. Perhaps the most complete player in the game, Schauffele is eyeing his second TPC River Highlands victory after defeating Sahith Theegala in 2022.

Ludvig Åberg, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay are among those in fine form aiming to win their first trophies of the year, while major champions like Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Wyndham Clark complete a star-studded squad for take the stage in New England.

Travelers Championship 2024 field, odds

  • Scottie Scheffler (7/2): The world number 1 experienced a series of professional firsts at Pinehurst. He shot four consecutive rounds over par for the first time in 120 professional matches and averaged just one birdie per round on top of that. The level of concern is still zero, as Scheffler hit the ball like he normally does, but was fooled on the putting surfaces. Stepping off the smooth Bermuda grass should be a welcome sight and allow him to continue his love affair with the sledgehammer putter that had won him strokes in seven straight tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open.
  • Xander Schauffele (7-1): Schauffele has now posted four consecutive top-10 finishes since the Wells Fargo Championship, and the most recent two have come without his best. Struggling with the driver at Pinehurst and hitting only about 50% of the fairways, Schauffele did well to break into the top 10 at the end of the week. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if he did much better this week and really entered contention this weekend, as he has four top 20s in five starts, including the win from two years ago.
  • Ludvig Aberg (12-1)
  • Colin Morikawa (12-1)
  • Viktor Hovland (18-1)
  • Patrick Cantlay (20-1): Cantlay appeared to have turned the corner at the US Open, where he earned his third top-five finish of the season. Close to victory, the former FedEx Cup champion found something in his steely game that we haven’t seen in a while. If there is any place for Cantlay to continue this upward trend, it is at TPC River Highlands, where he has finished in the top 15 in his last six starts.
  • Hideki Matsuyama (25-1)
  • Russell Henley (28-1): Henley’s high floor was matched by a high ceiling performance at the US Open, where he sprinted to the finish line and placed in the top 10 at the end of the tournament. He now quietly has three top 15s in his last four U.S. Opens, and his ability to consistently split fairways and hole out with confidence should come in handy at TPC River Highlands. Finishing in the top 20 in their last two trips to Connecticut, the Georgia Bulldogs should love their chances this week given their form, fitness and the confidence they are playing with.
  • Sam Burns (30-1)
  • Tony Finau (30-1): Finau found his rhythm. A top-three finish at the US Open marked his fourth consecutive top 20 and his second consecutive top 10 as he arrived at Pinehurst with a strong result at Jack’s. He continues to drive the ball much better and hit irons as well as anyone, but the reason for the increase is in the short game department. Finau has now gained strokes on the greens in consecutive matches for the first time since March and will threaten the title if he makes all three in a row this week.
  • Tommy Fleetwood (30-1)
