Zac Gallen injury: D-backs ace placed on 15-day IL with hamstring strain

Already facing a tough climb up the standings, the Arizona Diamondbacks lost ace Zac Gallen to a hamstring injury on Thursday night. Gallen left his game against the New York Mets at Citi Field (NY 3, ARI 2) with a strained right hamstring after just six pitches and was placed on the 15-day injured reserve on Friday, the team announced. Righty Slade Cecconi was recalled in a corresponding move.

“Just a tendon grabbed me,” Gallen said of the injury (via MLB.com). “So I threw another pitch to see if it was serious, in the sense of whether I could keep throwing or not.”

The D-Backs have not yet revealed the severity of the injury or announced a timetable for Gallen’s return. Here’s the injury. There’s not much to it – he threw a pitch and went up favoring his leg. He did not field test, instead immediately leaving the game with the coach. Gallen limped slightly as he left the field.

Gallen left the April 26 game against the Seattle Mariners with tightness in the same hamstring. The D-Backs did not place him on the injured list at the time. Instead, they used scheduled days off to skip Gallen’s next match and give him 10 days off before his next match. He returned on May 7 and has pitched well since then, reporting no hamstring issues.

The D-Backs are already without Eduardo Rodriguez, their big free agent signing, and the reliable Merrill Kelly. Rodriguez has a side strain and Kelly has a shoulder problem. Both have been on the injured list for 60 days and are weeks away from returning. Losing Gallen for any length of time would be a significant blow to a team that is pushing the limits of its pitching depth.

Arizona’s rotation depth chart looks like this right now:

  1. RHP Zac Gallen (out with a hamstring strain)
  2. LHP Jordan Montgomery
  3. RHP Merrill Kelly (Left with shoulder injury)
  4. LHP Eduardo Rodríguez (left with side injury)
  5. RHP Brandon Pfaadt
  6. RHP Ryne Nelson
  7. LHP Blake Walston
  8. LHP Tommy Henry
  9. RHP Slade Cecconi

Cecconi, Henry and Nelson have combined for a 5.93 ERA in 19 starts this season. Even Montgomery, who signed during the final week of spring training, has struggled. He has a 4.69 ERA in seven starts. Walston made his MLB debut earlier this month and held a weak Miami Marlins offense scoreless in 4 2/3 innings in his first start last weekend.

Even with Corbin Carroll’s season-long decline, the D-Backs are averaging 4.46 runs per game, the eighth-most in baseball. However, keeping races off the board has been a challenge. Arizona is allowing 4.55 runs per game, the 10th most in baseball. Now he’s lost Gallen, who has a 3.12 ERA and averages about six innings per game, to a hamstring injury.

Thursday’s loss drops the D-Backs to 25-31 this season. They are 5-2 against the abysmal Colorado Rockies and 20-29 against everyone else. Arizona is 3.5 games back of the third wild card spot with five teams ahead.
