UFC 300 lived up to its potential as the biggest mixed martial arts card of all time. Max Holloway knockout with horn Justin Gaethje’s will live forever and Alex Pereira is dominating light heavyweight in a way not seen in years. The promotion returns to pay-per-view on Saturday when it arrives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for UFC 301.
UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja makes his second title defense against an unexpected challenger. Steve Erceg has looked brilliant in his three UFC fights since his debut last year, but few expected him to receive a title shot while ranked 10th in the official UFC flyweight rankings. The most exciting offering on the card is the return of UFC Hall of Famer José Aldo. The record featherweight champion ends his 18-month retirement with the final fight of his current UFC contract. Aldo fights bantamweight contender Jonathan Martinez. Other notable UFC 301 fighters include Michel Pereira and Anthony Smith.
UFC fans should temper their expectations when looking at the May schedule. Derrick Lewis x Rodrigo Nascimento and Edson Barboza x Lerone Murphy are far from being exciting attractions for UFC Fight Night. Fortunately, a tepid May gives way to a highly successful June. The three cards announced for June are incredible at first glance. Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier headlines UFC 302 with Sean Strickland vs. Paulo Costa in a five-round co-main event. The middleweight title eliminator pits Robert Whittaker vs. Khamzat Chimaev at UFC Fight Night on June 22 in Saudi Arabia. All roads lead to UFC International Fight Week on June 29, anchored by Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler on the UFC 303 marquee.
