Makhachev vs. Poirier odds, UFC 302 predictions, lines, time, picks: Best bets on the fight card by MMA expert

Lightweight king Islam Makhachev will look to maintain his dominant position in MMA on Saturday when he faces iconic challenger Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier. The five-round clash anchors the UFC 302 main fight card, beginning at 10 p.m. ET at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Since losing his UFC debut, Makhachev has won 13 fights in a row and captured UFC gold in the process. The fourth-ranked Poirier is on the short list of talented UFC fighters who have never won an undisputed title, but he is a former interim champion who came up short in two previous fights for the undisputed lightweight belt.

Makhachev is a -625 favorite (risk $625 to win $100), while Poirier comes back at +450 in the latest UFC 302: Makhachev vs. UFC odds. In the co-main event, former middleweight champion Sean Strickland (-240) faces the robust Paulo Costa (+200). Before securing your picks for UFC 302: Makhachev x Poirier, be sure to see MMA predictions and betting advice from SportsLine expert Kyle Marley.

Marley won the UFC’s first “ToutMaster” betting contest sponsored by MMAOddsBreaker and regularly appears on several MMA betting and daily fantasy shows. He watches every fight on every professional MMA card and does extensive research before each event.

Over the past five years, $100 bettors who followed Marley’s picks have won nearly $10,000. In February at UFC Fight Night, Marley advised SportsLine insiders to back underdog Jack Hermansson (+220) against rising prospect Joe Pyfer (-275) in the middleweight main event. Hermansson won by unanimous decision to give Marley’s followers another easy victory. Anyone who followed him saw massive returns.

Now, with UFC 302 in sight, Marley has studied the card from top to bottom and revealed his top selections. These picks are only available on SportsLine.

UFC 302: Makhachev vs Poirier preview

There’s a chance Makhachev (25-1) leaves a legacy to rival that of his compatriot and mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who memorably retired in 2020 at age 32 with a 29-0 record. During his current winning streak, his closest fight came in a close decision against former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who at the time was a dominant champion in his own right. Makhachev won the rematch at UFC 294 last October via first-round knockout.

Perhaps the glaring difference between Makhachev and Nurmagomedov is that Makhachev cannot finish his career undefeated. He was knocked out in October 2015 in his UFC debut by journeyman Adriano Martins, who went winless for the next nine years before taking the decision against Donovan Desmae in the Kongs FC promotion in March of this year.

Because of the debut loss, the UFC pitted Makhachev against slim competition for several years and his rise to the top, while not unnoticed, was relatively unspectacular. Even so, the 32-year-old Dagestani proved he belongs to the sport’s elite by defeating former champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant title at UFC 280 in October 2020.

However, crowd sentiment will likely be on the side of Poirier (30-8-1), whose 13-year tenure in the UFC is marked by numerous memorable wars. He won most of them, including two wins over Conor McGregor and Max Holloway and a two-fight split with Justin Gaethje. However, he was submitted in both title fights, one by Nurmagomedov and the other by Oliveira. Makhachev has 11 career finishes among his 25 professional victories. Top UFC 302 Predictions

Here we will reveal one of Marley’s selections at UFC 302: he is on the side of Jailton Almeida (-260) to overcome Alexander Romanov (+210) in a heavyweight pairing on the main card.

Almeida (20-3) is an ace grappler who gained recognition by winning his first six UFC fights. However, the Brazilian suffered his first defeat in his last fight, when he was stopped by veteran Curtis Blades at UFC 299, in March.

Romanov (17-2) is a talented fighter who won his first five UFC fights, but the Russian fighter has stumbled in higher-level competition and lost two of his last three fights.

“Almeida is very strong and is willing to fight in a chain for the entire 15 minutes. I see him dominating with top control and probably finishing,” Marley told SportsLine. See who else can bet on UFC 302 here.
