UFC 302: Makhachev vs Poirier preview

Makhachev (25-1) is currently No. 1 in the UFC’s pound-for-pound fighter rankings. He hasn’t lost in nearly nine years and brings a 13-fight winning streak into the main event of UFC 302 on Saturday. However, his star power thus far has been relatively limited for a fighter who appears to have the potential to be one of the promotion’s most dominant champions in recent memory.

This is largely due to the fact that Makhachev maintains a modest public profile, but has also displayed a somewhat abrasive disposition towards his fellow fighters and the media. Still, even his most ardent critics cannot deny that Makhachev has earned his status as an elite UFC champion.

The 32-year-old Dagestan native is a known prodigy for former undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is Makhachev’s main coach and mentor.

Makhachev is a heavy favorite against Poirier (30-8-1), the 11-year UFC veteran and one of the most popular fighters on the UFC roster. Poirier’s extensive resume includes two knockout wins over Conor McGregor, two wins over former featherweight champion Max Holloway and a 1-1 split with Justin Gaethje.

However, his two title fights resulted in submission losses to Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. Still, his comeback win against the highly regarded Saint Denis, who finished as a more than 2/1 favorite, showed that the 35-year-old Louisiana native is still among the UFC’s elite. Top UFC 302 Predictions

We’ll share one of Vithlani’s UFC 302 selections here: he’s siding with Alex Morono (-235) to raise his hand against Niko Price (+195) in a battle of veteran middleweights.

Price made his debut at UFC 207 in 2016 and is one of three UFC fighters to win via upkick knockout. However, he is 1-4 (1 NC) in his last six fights, being knocked out by Robbie Lawler at UFC 290 in just 38 seconds last year.

Moreno has won two of his last three fights and holds a strong 13-6 record in the UFC. He beat Court McGee by unanimous decision in April, marking the fifth time in seven fights he has gone the distance. Moreno is one of the toughest fighters in the sport and Price is no longer the fighter he once was.

“It appears that Price is at the end of his UFC career. Price has been in some legendary fights. Unfortunately, he has been at a disadvantage in many of them. Price’s style of action has taken its toll, and at this point he is very attainable,” he said. Vithlani told SportsLine. You can see more UFC 302 picks at SportsLine.
