At this point in the NFL In the off-season, almost every team commits to competing. After all, it is spring: the dawn of fresh grass, first training sessions and new hopes for the season ahead. But perhaps there is no division that justifies such widespread optimism as that of the NFC North, which has seen three different champions in the last three years. In fact, if you look closely, there is a solid case to be made for all four clubs in the quartet as challengers for the 2024 throne.

Drafting the consensus top No. 1 overall quarterback prospect certainly helps, but it’s not just Caleb Williams’ entry as a potential off-script gunslinger that moves the needle; the updated supporting cast can do just as much heavy lifting, if not more, here. Unlike Justin Fields before him, Williams won’t have average depth, but rather proven weapons everywhere. The retooled receiving trio of DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze alone should keep them competitive. Couple that with the defense of Matt Eberflus, who reached almost suffocating form towards the end of 2023, and one of the Easier projected timelines 2024, and it’s not hard to imagine Chicago instantly jumping into the wildcard race.

Call them a moderate offshoot of the rival Bears, given that they are pairing a rookie signal-caller with a favorable setup. The big differences: 1.) Minnesota’s lineup is even better suited to accommodate a young quarterback, with elite playmakers at running back (Aaron Jones), wideout (Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison) and tight end (TJ Hockenson). ; and 2.) rookie JJ McCarthy is considered more of a play-action savant than a superstar at center, assuming he quickly usurps replacement Sam Darnold. But this team was aggressive even with a slew of post-Kirk Cousins lottery tickets in 2023, head coach Kevin O’Connell is revered internally and the overachieving “D” under Brian Flores has a deeper rotation of quick passes.
The initial projection
On paper, the Lions remain the safest bet to retain the NFC North crown, which is a testament to how much they have restored their reputation under the bold guidance of Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes. They simply have the cleanest roster ever, plus experienced decision makers behind the scenes.
