Commanders leave door open for a possible name change, but doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon

Washington commanders are open to changing the name, but that doesn’t appear to be something that will happen anytime soon.

Washington finally changed its name in 2020 amid continued backlash. The franchise was briefly renamed the “Washington Football Team” in 2020 (winning the NFC East that year) before going to the Commanders in 2022. A whopping 58% of fans said they don’t like the team’s new nickname. in a poll recently conducted by the Washington Post.

“As you can imagine, everyone has an opinion on the name,” said Majorie Harris, wife of Commanders majority owner Josh Harris. recently told NBC Sports. “Some good, some bad, some in between. I think we have a lot of work to do, so this name issue will sit aside for now until we can get things moving.

“Frankly, I spent a whole day in the community and kept referring to the team as Commanders. And you know what? It sounds pretty good to me. So for now, it’s the Commanders.”

Based on Harris’ comments, it appears that while they are open to a name change, Washington bosses have other things they want to resolve first. Even if a name change happens, it doesn’t appear to happen in the immediate future.

Harris also alluded to the possibility of fans adopting the Commanders’ nickname, despite the Post’s recent poll results. This likely contributed to Harris’ comments about not rushing to change the nickname.

Along with the recent survey results, Commanders coach Dan Quinn recent shirt The fact that it includes a reference to the team’s old logo is further evidence of fans’ desire to see a name change, likely in favor of something that pays homage to the franchise’s history.

Instead of worrying about the team’s name, however, Harris and company are focused on getting Washington back to championship contention. The franchise didn’t win a Super Bowl since 1991, after winning three (and playing fourth) four times in a 10-year period from 1982-91. Washington’s new ownership is in his first full season at the helm of the program after purchasing the franchise last July.

“This year, it’s all about our organization,” Harris said of the Washington property’s current focus. “Last year was a little bit about finding our way and not being able to make the changes we hoped to make until we had the opportunity to do so. Now we have. We have an incredible quarterback (rookie Jayden Daniels) and we have a coach amazing (Quinn) and GM (Adam Peters) and we are really putting the pieces together.

“We are all very excited about what this team looks like and what we hope can happen with a little luck, magic, skill and hard work.”
