Courtland Sutton says he will participate in mandatory minicamp next week, confirming what Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton speculated earlier this week. The wide receiver did not attend offseason workouts due to contractual reasons, but Sutton told reporters he will be present for mandatory sessions.
“I’ll be there. I’ll be there.” Sutton said DNVR Thursday.
The 28-year-old explained how missing training this offseason has been a struggle for him.
“It’s killing me not being able to be in the OTAs. This has been a very different off-season than I’ve been a part of since I’ve been in the league,” Sutton said. “Anyone who knows me and who has played with me knows that I love this game. … I give everything and anything I can when it comes to preparation when it comes to the football competition.”
He adds that he will give up everything to get the team back to the playoffs and play for a Super Bowl. Sutton says the Broncos have expectations not only for themselves, but for the city of Denver. Sutton said players want to prepare so they can win enough games to extend their season beyond just 17 games.
“No one deserves this more than this city… even when we are down, they continue to show us love,” Sutton said. “It’s only fair that we go in and give them what they deserve.”
Earlier this week, Payton highlighted Sutton’s commitment as one of the reasons he believes the receiver will be present in the team’s next phase of activity.
“Yeah, I think he’ll be here for minicamp,” Payton said Tuesday, via NBC Sports. “I mean, it’s mandatory. When people ask me about Courtland — and I’ll say this — I just know his work ethic. I know the player. There’s a list of things that go through his mind at this point in time in the offseason as a head coach.” “
When asked if Sutton’s absence thus far is due to his contract, Payton joked, saying, “Well, it’s not that he doesn’t like our new uniforms.”
Sutton currently has two years and about $27.6 million remaining on his contract, with $2 million in guaranteed money and $14 million due this year. Whether the deal is changed or not, Payton believes everything will be okay in the end.
“And respectfully, when I tell him this, because he and I have talked, I think this is going to work out. I think he’ll be here, yes, but I’m not sure,” Payton said.
If Sutton skipped all three days of mandatory minicamp, he would have been fined about $100,000.
The Broncos traded Jerry Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns this offseason, making Sutton’s value to Denver even higher. Sutton led the team in receiving yards last season with 772, just above Jeudy’s 758 yards. He also led the team in touchdowns (10), targets (90) and receptions (59).
