Eagles rookie Quinyon Mitchell not as quiet as teammates thought, opens up on trash talk to A.J. Brown

PHILADELPHIA – Quinyon Mitchell isn’t known for talking much. When the Philadelphia Eagles rookie cornerback speaks, though, it’s noticeable.

AJ Brown revealed earlier this week how the soft-spoken Mitchell reported that a route he took was “trash”. Brown had a smile on his face as he told the story, but Mitchell revealed that maybe the path wasn’t so bad after all.

“I mean, it actually went a long way,” Mitchell said with a laugh Thursday. “I finally got to face AJ, so I wanted to talk about him a little bit, but it was a good road.”

The banter between Mitchell and Brown was something Brown enjoyed, liking how a rookie cornerback was confident enough to throw some shade at him. Mitchell certainly isn’t lacking in confidence.

“Yes yes. I talk a little trash,” Mitchell said. “Just push my teammates, you know, compete when I get that chance and the opportunity, then just go out and enjoy the good days.”

Mitchell also doesn’t necessarily want to be a vocal guy, especially as a rookie. I’m already learning how quickly the NFL the game is in minicamp and it is an initial challenge.

“Just coming here made me want to put my head down and work,” Mitchell said. “Earning the trust and respect of my teammates. Make a good play and talk some trash, just fuel the competition.”

When Mitchell badmouthed Brown, it opened some eyes in the secondary. However, Cooper DeJean, another quiet rookie, wasn’t surprised by the veterans badmouthing Mitchell — even though it might be a little out of character.

“He shows up every now and then,” DeJean said. “You know, subtle little things that are kind of funny. He’s quiet and doesn’t talk much, so when you hear that you laugh a little.”

Who is quieter? Mitchell or DeJean?

“I feel Q’s [Mitchell] even quieter than me,” DeJean said. “I think we’re both trying to learn as much as we can from the guys that have been here and played in this league. Just trying to learn as much as possible, take it all in.”

While Mitchell is learning how to play cornerback at the pro level, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has the first-round pick lining up with the first team in dime formations and giving him some outside reps. While Mitchell has performed well, Kelee Ringo and Isaiah Rodgers are ahead of him at the outside cornerback position alongside Darius Slay.

That could change this summer. Facing Brown will help, a challenge Mitchell continues to embrace.

“Whenever I get a chance, the opportunity, he and DeVonta [Smith],” Mitchell said of covering both wide receivers in practice. “The two best in the game, so I mean they’re going to give me a great job. I’m looking forward to it.”
