PHILADELPHIA – Mandatory minicamp for the Philadelphia Eagles has concluded as the team begins its summer break before putting on pads for training camp and beginning preparation for the 2024 season.
The training camp depth chart is still not a clear picture, although there is a better sense of who will be competing for certain roster spots. Not surprisingly, the players who were in the conversation for these spots also excelled in the last month of mandatory OTAs and minicamp.
Who were the highlights of the mandatory minicamp? Who increased their shares last month? These players are worth monitoring at the end of July:
Ringo certainly put himself on track to start alongside Darius Slay at cornerback early in training camp. Splitting first-team reps with Isaiah Rodgers throughout the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 portions of minicamp, Ringo more than held his own against AJ Brown in multiple reps.
The Eagles are still in limbo with James Bradberry and where does it fit into the equationbut Ringo is putting himself in a position where the franchise doesn’t have to worry too much if they move on from Bradberry.
“I’m very much against him,” Brown said. “He’s definitely growing. You can see a different step with him. I’m not going to put too much pressure on him, but you can definitely see a different step with him. He’s hungry. He’s competing at a high level.”
The Eagles have a spot at WR3. Ross just arrived in Philadelphia a month ago after a rookie minicamp tryoutbut he impressed enough to be considered for this job.
Working primarily with the second team, Ross has opened up in the middle of the field and has been more consistent on running routes. The Eagles could be proactive in finding a WR3 through trade or free agency, but Ross entered the conversation for that spot.
CB Isaiah Rodgers
Who knew if Rodgers would come close to the player he was in Indianapolis? Being out of football for a year did not eliminate Rodgers, who made plays with the ball throughout minicamp. The Eagles’ cornerbacks as a whole have performed well this spring, but Rodgers appears to be fighting for more than just a roster spot.
The Eagles have a surplus at cornerback, so they won’t keep all of them. Rodgers could be a trade candidate with the number of cornerbacks he has if he wants to improve at another position. He will be in a battle with Ringo, Bradberry and Quinyon Mitchell for first-team reps at outside cornerback.
The Eagles wasted no time moving Becton to guard in minicamp, as Becton was the starting left guard with Landon Dickerson held out of minicamp for personal reasons.
Forwards work on technique in minicamp more than anything else, but Becton demonstrated fluidity to be able to play guard. He will have the opportunity to compete with Tyler Steen, Matt Hennessy and Max Scharping for the right guard spot this summer.
With Becton’s talent and sizehe will win the job if he adjusts to defend well when the pads come on.
Vic Fangio revealed that the Eagles were giving Baun an inside linebacker look during OTAs. which held true during open practices in May. Baun was assigned to the first team as an inside linebacker in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods, while Nakobe Dean and Devin White spent time at MIKE.
Many Bauns have one of those inside linebacker positions to lose in training camp. Or the Eagles could have just Dean and White in the starting lineup. Either way, there is a significant role for Baun on this list.
Hall wasn’t talked about enough during mandatory minicamp practices, but it’s noticeable how Hall is getting reps with the first-team slot cornerback at 7-on-7. Hall also excels on special teams, which gives him yet another edge to earn a spot on this team as one of the cornerbacks.
The cornerback room is deep, but there could be a spot for Hall on this roster.
Jenkins has a long shot at making the 53-man roster, but the tight end had some impressive catches with the third team. A frequent target of Tanner McKee, Jenkins has made some notable plays that could give him an edge in earning a spot on the practice squad.
Jenkins may be listed as a tight end, but he catches passes like a wide receiver. It’s worth taking the time to develop if you have a good summer.
