The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs certainly got off to an exciting start. The action continued on Tuesday with two games that certainly didn’t lack for excitement.
The Boston Bruins entered Game 5 a bit shorthanded, as captain Brad Marchand was out with an upper-body injury. Even so, the Bruins managed to do their best and ended up coming away with a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. After Bruins forward Morgan Geekie and Panthers star Reinhart traded goals, defenseman Charlie McAvoy scored what turned out to be the winning goal at 10:25 of the second period. Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman stood out for his team by stopping 28 of the 29 shots he faced, including a great save in the final seconds. The Panthers still hold a 3-2 series lead.
Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers were looking to even their series against the Vancouver Canucks in Game 4. The Oilers jumped on the Canucks and took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. However, the Canucks were able to get back into the contest with goals from Conor Garland and Dakota Joshua in the third period to tie it up. Joshua’s goal tied the game with less than two minutes remaining. Still, the Oilers didn’t falter when defenseman Evan Bouchard found the back of the net with just 39 seconds left in regulation. The Oilers managed a hard-fought 3-2 victory to even the series at 2-2.
The structure of the playoffs is as follows:
- The division winner with the most points in each conference will face the second Wild Card team in the first round. The division winner with the fewest points in each conference will face the top Wild Card team in the first round.
- Each series will be a best-of-seven format.
- Home field advantage goes to the higher-seeded team in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The team with the most points in the regular season has home-field advantage in the conference finals and Stanley Cup Final.
