The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continues to bring exciting action. Thursdays NHL the action certainly had a dramatic flair, to say the least.
The New York Rangers became the first team to advance to the conference finals by defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 in an upset. Despite trailing 3-1 in the third period, the Rangers were able to erase that deficit thanks to forward Chris Kreider’s hat trick. Kreider scored three of the team’s four goals in the period, including the game-winner at 15:41 of the final game. Now, the Rangers are headed to the Eastern Conference finals for the second time in three seasons.
Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers traded goals in the first two periods and were tied at 2-2 in the third period. However, the Canucks were the beneficiaries of a fortunate comeback that resulted in star forward JT Miller scoring the game-winner with just 33 seconds left in regulation. Now the Canucks are just one win away from advancing to the Western Conference final.
The structure of the playoffs is as follows:
- The division winner with the most points in each conference will face the second Wild Card team in the first round. The division winner with the fewest points in each conference will face the top Wild Card team in the first round.
- Each series will be a best-of-seven format.
- Home field advantage goes to the higher-seeded team in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The team with the most points in the regular season has home-field advantage in the conference finals and Stanley Cup Final.
