We have a lot to do today, but before we dive into all that, today is the 30th anniversary of June 17, 1994, one of the wildest and most surreal days the sports world has ever seen. If the mere mention of the date means anything to you, you’ll probably remember where you were when OJ Simpson’s white Bronco rolled down the streets and highways of Los Angeles. If the day means nothing to you, talk to an older relative or friend – or you can simply check out our retrospective of what you did that day THAT DAY.
Good morning everyone, but especially…
US OPEN CHAMPION BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU
The last round on Sunday US Open it had a little bit of everything. The first leader of the day stumbled. The challenger emerged. A harrowing collapse. AND a dose of lump-in-your-throat bunker in the final hole that would ultimately help deliver Bryson DeChambeau victory at Pinehurst No. 2 and at the same time continuing the major championship angst of Rory McIlroy.
The final round of the tournament — the 1,000th event hosted by the USGA — almost seemed scripted at times, as DeChambeau opened the day with a three-shot lead, only to see it disappear and then resurface when the Dallas resident holed in his putt. to fall. DeChambeau celebrated as much as he could, in all his double-barreled, punching glory. Golf writer Chip Patterson explains what DeChambeau’s second major victory (2020 US Open) could mean for sport:
- Patterson: “Often, the idea of DeChambeau the YouTube star is confused by an older generation of golf fans who neither consume his content nor his target audience. What did you see among the more than 100,000 fans in attendance at Pinehurst No. 2 this week, though, was the target audience — a younger, more online, social media-savvy fan base that powered their favorite golfer through 72 tough holes… DeChambeau fed off listening catchphrases from his YouTube channel shouted out by fans, and they also loved the opportunity to watch their favorite influencer in person.”

And it’s not a good day to…
RORY McILROY, US Open runner-up
In the grand scheme of things, in a sport like golf, a second-place finish in a major tournament is no reason to get down on yourself. (You did, after all, just pocket a prize of US$2.3 million for a weekend job.) But… if you’re Rory McIlroy and you’ve been trying to get back to first place in a major championship for literally 10 years, had a two-stroke lead with five holes to play, missed two shots within four feet, and missed three of the last four holes to lose by a single stroke , today might be one of those Mondays where you’d rather not get out of bed.
Of holes 15 through 18 played during the event, McIlroy had only aced three of them during the first three days, and he had not hit the score on consecutive holes during the event until Sunday’s 16th and 17th. afternoon. In fact, he even made birdies at 15 and 18 in the first round, so this one will probably hurt for a while. For a great read on McIlroy’s meltdowns, check out Kyle Porter’s comprehensive look at how the 35-year-old got here – and how he left Pinehurst No..
- Concierge: “McIlroy walked down the stairs and into the scoring room looking more despondent than ever… Before DeChambeau finished signing his card as the 124th U.S. Open champion, McIlroy found his rental car, fleeing a crime scene that he created… Without speaking to anyone outside his inner circle, McIlroy started his Lexus, raised some gravel on your way out was in the air before DeChambeau finished speaking to the media. It was, all things considered, his worst and weakest impulse of the week.”

Fever overcomes Sky in another Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese physical reunion
The next chapter of the ongoing Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese show continued Sunday with the Fever defeating the Sky 91-83 at home. Both rookies had notable stats, as Clark easily had his best game of the season with 23 points on efficient 7-of-11 shooting, eight rebounds and nine assists. Meanwhile, Reese posted another double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds) but spent much of the afternoon in foul trouble.
However, the most talked about moment of the game was when Reese caught Clark in the head with his forearm as she tried to block Clark’s tray. It was correctly seen as a basketball play It is correctly assessed as a flagrant foul 1 as any contact with player’s head that was what obvious will call employees to review it.
Chicago Camila Cardoso had a strong performance by recording his first double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds), and Indiana’s Aliá Boston He was also extremely effective with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and five blocks. WNBA writer Jack Maloney notes that Boston and Clark have started to look more comfortable as the Fever have won back-to-back games for the first time.
- Maloney: “It was notable that six of his nine makes on Sunday came from feeds from Clark and a wide variety of plays. They had the pick-and-roll working, but they also connected on some timely cuts and some transition opportunities. The chemistry between the two No. 1 overall picks continues to grow, and that’s great news for the Fever.
Mariners making moves in MLB Power Rankings
O Yankees (50-24) may not have changed in our rankings, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need to look over their shoulder. Believe it or not, the Sailors (43-31) are playing like they can crash someone’s party in October. They were No. 10 two weeks ago, No. 8 last week, and now they are No. 7 in Matt Synder’s latest MLB Power Rankings.
- Snyder: “I’m sure there’s someone somewhere screaming “untenable!! “about their 17-7 record in one-run games, but they had built a considerable cushion in the AL West and the games played are already stacked up. Even though the Mariners played just .500 balls the rest of the way, they would finish 87-75 and that would probably get the division at this rate. It would certainly make the playoffs. Making the playoffs is good enough to consider a team a threat to win the World Series.
Matt said Luis Castillo, George Kirby It is Logan Gilberto they are “a three-headed monster”, which could certainly make the playoffs interesting in Seattle. About that, here are Matt’s top five:
- Yankees (previous: 1)
- Orioles (previous: 3)
- Phillies (previous: 2)
- Dodgers (previous: 4)
- Guardians (previous: 5)
I wonder where the Mariners end up next week.
