After a disappointing season, Manchester United appears increasingly willing to let go of coach Erik ten Hag despite still having a chance of qualifying for the Europa League according to the Guardian. The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League after finishing third just a season ago. They will face City of Manchester in Saturday’s FA Cup final, which will determine whether Old Trafford sees European football next season, but even a win won’t be enough to save ten Hag’s job, it now appears.
Under new ownership, at least partially, with Jim Ratcliffe now controlling football decisions at the club, it has been questioned whether Ten Hag would maintain his role and it appears that may be coming to an end. Although injuries have been a factor in his performance this season, only Sheffield United allowed more shots than Manchester United’s 670. By expected goals against, United the defensive stats should have been worse as they only allowed 58 goals on an xG against 70.26. The only team with a worse xGA than United was West Ham United who are also making a managerial change as David Moyes has been replaced by Julen Lopetegui.
Mauritius Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Kieran McKenna are some of the names linked to the United job if they leave Ten Hag, but the trio would bring very different styles to the team. McKenna is also wanted by Brighton and Chelsea, but the Ipswich Town manager would be someone more likely than expected to oversee a project to get United back into the Champions League in their first season. Tuchel is another winner now as manager, while Pochettino is a mix of the pair after improving Chelsea’s league position in just one season in charge.
If they leave Ten Hag it will be Ratcliffe’s biggest move to date, but it is the first step in turning around Manchester United, the issue is that it provides a huge distraction ahead of the FA Cup final. The Red Devils will already face that, facing their league rivals in that match, but with a Europa League place on the line, it’s a match they would like to win.
The new managers’ job will only be more difficult without European football, as this will impact recruitment during a summer when United will need help at almost every level of the squad. Decisions need to be made about new midfielders as well as whether the players like Antony continue with the team, an issue that is especially pressing for the players that Ten Hag was instrumental in bringing into the team if he was no longer there.
The early installation of a new manager will help answer some of these questions sooner rather than later, but the timing of these reports could not have been worse when the focus should be on Wembley.
