The United States women’s national team will close its international window on Tuesday against South Korea. The USWNT kicked off the Emma Hayes era with a 4-0 win on Friday and welcomed some new tactics along with the new technique itself. The two-game series will end at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the team will look to start a winning streak for their new coach.

Players to watch
Even though the Olympics are just a few weeks away, Hayes is just starting his first time off the field with the USWNT, so players are still getting final evaluations before the final roster for the Paris Olympics. Tuesday’s victory featured 16 different players on the field, with Hayes and the coaching staff maximizing their substitution windows to rotate more players into the game.
It was a pretty clear indicator that the entire 23-man roster will be utilized, especially given some lingering injuries to some players who entered camps initially. After Tuesday’s win, Hayes praised the players’ efforts after an intense week of training, and only seven players are yet to get minutes – including Alex Morgan. Although Hayes provided more context in postgame comments, this was a precaution taken by the team for the longtime forward due to pelvic tightness in training and prevented them from wanting to play a “good, fresh” Morgan in Minnesota.
So here are some players to watch:
Pink Lavelle: The attacking midfielder has returned to form after dealing with a leg injury following the USWNT’s Concacaf W Gold Cup title run. She played just 30 minutes on Tuesday and made an immediate impact by assisting on one of Mallory Swanson’s goals so she could make a full half to end the series.
Alex Morgan: Veteran of the squad who was in good form during the Gold Cup, but faced a nagging injury and now has a new coach to work with. How or if it will be used will be a big question mark in this final game before Hayes names his Olympic lineup.
Jaedyn Shaw: The 19-year-old leads the national team in goals this year and has already been on the field in different attacking roles. She came out of the Gold Cup at number 10, although now that Lavelle is back in contention, she saw time on the wing as a substitute on Tuesday. She is also dealing with a lingering injury, so the coaching staff may limit her role again as a precaution.
What are they saying
Hayes didn’t hesitate to applaud the team’s effort and willingness to adapt to new information in the opening week. Despite the big victory in the debut, she balanced lots of praise while telling the group that there is still a lot to improve in the second game against South Korea.
“I trained them a lot this week and I think with the altitude and the heat and the training, I thought there was a little bit of lethargy, but I thought the team persisted,” she told broadcasters after the game. “I thought we were in control of what we did in the first half, we maintained the structures, we maintained the training. At times I felt like maybe we could have played from behind at the right moments, but going from underplaying to overplaying is usually the first step… Everyone did what I asked.”
“I think you can see we’re building something,” Hayes said during his postgame conference. “There’s a lot of work to do. There are a lot of holes in our game, without a doubt, but it was a good start.”
Prediction
There will likely be player rotations on Hayes’ part and some adjustments on South Korea’s part, so perhaps not another lopsided win, but look for another convincing performance for the US. Choice: USWNT 3, South Korea 0
