Former USMNT coach Bruce Arena says MLS ‘miscommunication’ hindered job prospects after suspension

Veteran American soccer coach Bruce Arena is trying to revive his career months after he was suspended by MLS for making “inappropriate and insensitive comments” while in charge of the New England Revolution.

Arena had not coached a game since last July, when the league suspended him for his comments and opened an investigation. He resigned from his position in September, shortly before MLS issued a statement saying investigators “confirmed some of these allegations.” The league also said Arena “must first petition the commissioner” if he decides to seek employment with the league again.

The former U.S. men’s national team coach said he was cleared by commissioner Don Garber in December, but claims MLS did not effectively communicate his situation and therefore it only appeared he was eligible to be signed in April.

“I’ve had conversations,” he said on the latest episode of Kickin’ It, the CBS Sports Golazo Network talk show, which airs Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET. “I think there was a little miscommunication in the league about my status. I was cleared in December and no one knew about it… I talked to a few teams and I think some information wasn’t communicated properly, but we’ll leave it at that.”

Arena did not say which clubs he was in talks with or how advanced those talks were, but said he may be interested in Europe.

“If I get an opportunity in Europe, I will consider going,” he said. “I have a possibility. I don’t know if it will develop, but I probably should have, when you look back.”

Details surrounding Arena’s suspension remain unclear, both in terms of official communication from MLS and Revolution, as well as reporting on the matter. Arena also said he could not provide further information for legal reasons.

“If there comes a time where I can do it legally, I will,” he said of the details of his suspension. “I think the experience was painful.”

When asked if he took responsibility for what happened in terms of his suspension, Arena responded affirmatively.

“Yes, you have to take responsibility for this, but I think I have to be reserved in what I say,” he said, “but I will just say yes to your question, but I can’t go into detail.”

It remains unclear what exactly Arena is taking responsibility for and whether he has taken any corrective action for the inappropriate and insensitive comments he made. MLS has not officially commented on the reason for Garber’s decision to release Arena to seek employment with the league.
