The U.S. women’s national team wrapped up its two-game series against South Korea on Tuesday, delivering a 3–0 victory to start the Emma Hayes era with a winning streak. Crystal Dunn, Sophia Smith and Lily Yohannes scored the goals as a lot of player rotation was taken into account in the game. There will be a lot to evaluate for Hayes and his coaching staff as they look ahead to the Olympics and try to nail down the final roster.
So how did the players fare during the second game against South Korea? Take a look at our rankings to find out:
Goalkeeper
Casey Murphy
USA • General • #18
He was present in the match despite not being defeated by South Korea, made a solid save in an attempt in the first half and stood out in the second half. He also did a good job connecting passes with the defenders throughout the match.
Rating: 8
Defenders
He started on the right side and did a good job connecting from the start, as the team established the rhythm and won free kicks against the opponent.
Rating: 7
Emily Sonnet
USA • D • #14
He played as a defender after several games in midfield. He did a good job being the primary CB when the backline was functioning as a three-man defense.
Rating: 7
Sam Staab
CHI • D • #3
He made his debut as a starter and was solid in his positioning when involved in attacking scenarios. She made a good attempt at goal and was good in distribution. Rating: 7.5
Jenna Nightswonger
YOU ARE SAD
She was tasked as an offensive defender during her time on the field. She didn’t seem uncomfortable covering the extra space with good connections on the left side and provided the assist to open the goal.
Rating: 8
Midfielders
Lindsey Horan
USA • M • #10
Active in the pockets to win the ball and played another strong game where he won free kicks and set pieces. Pairs well with Korbin Albert and Rose Lavelle in ball progression.
Rating: 7.5
Korbin Alberto
USA • M • #15
He did a good job as a double midfielder alongside Horan and was effective in progressing the ball for the team. I got involved in running alongside rotated players in the second half.
Rating: 7
Rosa Lavelle
USA • M • #16
He was constantly trying to make things happen when he had the ball and he was able to play without pressure. He had good connections with Dunn.
Rating: 7
Forwards
Alex Morgan
USA • F • #13
She was heavily marked by defenders to open the game and her positioning and attacking play helped to open up spaces, but she was unable to land dangerous attempts on target.
Rating: 6.5
Crystal Dunn
USA • M • #19
He started on the attacking line on the right side and scored the opening goal. She covered a lot of ground throughout the game and handled a formation change pushing her down like a pro. The only veteran on the team to play 90 minutes.
Rating: 8.5
He hit the ball frequently and had promising plays in the first half, but seemed more effective in the second half as number 10, after Lavelle left the match. Rating: 7
Substitutions
Mallory Swanson
USA • F
It took him little time to make an impact off the bench and he immediately stretched South Korea’s defense. He was heavily involved in the attacking runs and helped set up a fake shot at Smith’s goal. Rating: 8
Sophia Smith
USA • F • #11
Scored a goal after being challenged by a defender from a difficult angle. He has been a threat as a nine or winger for the team. He’s in incredible shape at the moment and basically an Olympic bracket after this window. Rating: 8.5
From bubble player to instant starter in the team, even in a substitute role, Sam Coffey provided an additional layer of winning, disrupting and distributing the ball. Rating: 7.5
Trinity Rodman
USA • F • #20
Arguably the hardest working player on the field, no matter how many minutes she is playing. She works almost like a magnet on the ball, searching for it whether in attack or defense and constantly trying to collaborate. She assisted Yohannes’ goal. Rating: 8
Lily Yohannes
USA • M • #16
The 16-year-old only needed 17 minutes to make her presence felt in the middle third. Excellent ball control and chosen passes to advance the ball to teammates. She won her first premiership and marked her personal milestone.
Rating: 8
Coach Emma Hayes
Officially on a two-game winning streak with his new team, Hayes spoke extensively this week about trust building and the trust process. Winning will undoubtedly help build that trust between players and coaching staff, but even with just a few weeks to go before the final Olympic squad is named, the principles Hayes asked the team to adhere to have been met. Let’s go to the farewell matches of the Olympics in July.
