Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee has produced the assist for the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament so far. The former NFL player made a sensational cross from the right of the field that was met by CBS Sports Golazo’s Mike Grella in the first Concafa game.

The goal has been one of the highlights of the competition in Cary, NC so far and Grella thanked McAfee for his vision and expert execution.
“Pat MacAfee – shout out to him for the assist because the ball to me was perfect,” Grella told his CBS Sports Golazo Network colleagues on Morning Footy. “I got in behind the midfielder who was protecting me and I was far enough away from the right back or whatever position you want to call it. Then I saw it was Pat and I was worried if he would make it. see me and then run it.
“I gave a very loud, high-pitched scream and he looked up, sliced it like a pitching wedge so that it was suspended in the air. The ball just floated there for what seemed like an eternity and for me it was easy to hit it. I put my left leg up there to balance myself and I have that swing in the closet and I’ve been doing it my whole life.
“The ball was fantastic, all the boys were going crazy and it was good to be in that team atmosphere again. People probably don’t know, but I played with Pat in 2003 for Region 1 ODP, which is actually a very high level. It’s not like a guy who started playing football for PR – he was a football player back then and he’s a very good player.”
The 2024 group stage at TST concluded on Wednesday night with McAfee and Grella’s Concafa SC ready to advance to the knockouts thanks to a plus-five goal difference in their victory over Chad Johnson’s Nati SC.
“After the first game we were a disaster,” added Grella. “I got a thousand phone calls from all the different Pep Guardiolas – Nigel (Reo-Coker) being one of them – saying: ‘You guys are rubbish, you have to do this, you have to do that, what are you doing down there? ?’ And then at night he was funny because he was totally quiet, there was nothing else – all the Pep Guardiolas were gone.”
A win against fellow CBS Sports personality JJ Watt’s Burnley SC will keep McAfee and Grella in contention for the tournament’s $1 million overall prize money.
“Charlie, it’s a tough job, man,” Grella told former USMNT man and colleague Charlie Davies. “I said yesterday that it’s a young man’s game and it is, man. on site, very individualistic, doing our own thing, everyone had their own ideas and for the afternoon/evening session we were more organized, a lot of communication and we were able to work together and we managed to get out of that position and. It’s helped our game a lot, Charlie, it’s a chore – make sure if you come next year you’re super, super fit.
