USMNT player ratings vs. Colombia: USA put up worst performance of Gregg Berhalter era

The United States men’s team was destroyed by Colombia on Saturday in an international friendly, eliminating any current momentum as preparation continues ahead of the Copa América. The USA managed to reduce the deficit to 2-0, but conceded three goals in the second half to complete the embarrassing scoreline. See how the US performed:

Goalkeeper: Matt Turner

Jhon Arias’ opening goal was scored with great speed, but we never like being beaten at the near post. He then conceded a bicycle kick as Rafael Santos Borre was left open. Just a little bad luck. The second one could perhaps be saved, but I can’t blame him for that. In the third goal, his defense disappointed, and in the other two, his team disappointed.
Rating: 4

Right back: Joe Scally

You can’t knock his effort, but Joe Scally had a tough run-in with Liverpool star Luis Diaz. He held his ground most of the time. He probably should have stuck with Borre for the second goal, but overall, it wasn’t too bad a performance as he tries to replace Sergino Dest.
Rating: 4.5

Central defense: Chris Richards

He should have done better in the air, but he wasn’t terrible. He was usually aware of his surroundings and tried to make sure spaces were covered, but things just wouldn’t fall his way and disappear as the game ended.
Rating: 4

Central defense: Tim Ream

I won’t blame him for the opening goal. Tim Ream was in a strong position to block the shot, he made it difficult, but the ball still went in. There was a lack of agility to keep up with Colombia’s fast players and it got worse as the game went on.
Rating: 4

Left back: Antonee Robinson

His sliding contact with the ball led to Colombia’s opening goal, but Antonee Robinson can’t be blamed. He did well to at least not let it go, and his companions should have been there to avert the danger. Handed a shiny ball to Folarin Balogun moments later. It almost cost the US a third with sloppy play and, as before, it was playing at half speed.
Rating: 3.5

Steering wheel: Johnny Cardoso

Denied Colombia’s second goal with an attentive challenge, but his blatant lack of marking on Colombia’s third goal was alarming. He left completely Ricardo Rios, which floated to the center of the box and had a radius of about 10 meters around it, with no one around. This doesn’t happen with Tyler Adams in this situation.
Rating: 2

Central midfielder: Weston McKennie

His positioning was a little confusing, and because of that, it was difficult for him to really get into a rhythm. He did very well when it came to returning the ball and playing with patience, but he is someone you want to be a major factor in the attack.
Rating: 4

Central midfielder Gio Reyna

His slight hesitation in Colombia’s first goal proved costly because he could have reacted to clear the danger. On the ball he wasn’t as involved as we’d hoped and the rust set in, but he did well in tight spaces to keep things moving.
Rating: 4

Right winger: Tim Weah

Quiet…until he wasn’t. He scored a beautiful goal in the 58th minute with a beautiful shot inside the box after a ball from Balogun. He ruined it all with a silly turn that led to Colombia’s fourth-place finish.
Rating: 4

Striker: Folarin Balogun

The AS Monaco the man was a threat from an early age. He turned quickly with the ball, made aggressive runs. He registered an assist at the start of the second half with a beautiful through ball to Tim Weah, who pulled one back.
Rating: 5.5

Far left: Christian Pulisic

Other than a fortunate header that threatened, he didn’t do much in terms of testing the Colombian defense. A solid pass here and there, he was withdrawn at half time after a 45 minute shift.

Subscribers

Haji Wright
He came close at the start of the second half with a header. He was excited and made strong, diagonal runs.
Rating: 5

Cameron Carter-Vickers
Questionable defense in Colombia’s quarter, giving the angle when committing inside. In the fifth goal, his terrible touch was a gift.
Rating: 2

Malik Tillman
Colombia were in total control when he entered and scored zero positives impact.
Rating: 4

Yunus Musah
I got an early knock and it never seemed resolved.
Rating: 5

Ricardo Pepi
I got a front row seat to Colombia’s stellar attack. He was simply a spectator.
Assessment: N/A

Luca da Torre
Late sub who has never been so involved in less than 10 minutes.
Rating: N/A

Manager Gregg Berhalter

The US chief said this is not a lesson learned, but a warning. I’m not saying that this is a result that should put him in the spotlight, as it was a friendly, but it couldn’t have been worse. It was incredibly sloppy and no excuses could be given. He didn’t have this team ready. They better try harder against Brazil on Wednesday, or they will enter the Copa América with the lowest expectations.
