United States men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter officially reduced his training roster from 27 players to 26 for the Copa America on Friday, sending LAFC midfielder Timothy Tillman home before the start of the competition.

Here’s a look at the full list.

  • Goalkeepers: Ethan Horvath, Sean Johnson, Matt Turner
  • Defenders: Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kristoffer Lund, Mark McKenzie, Shaq Moore, Tim Ream, Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson, Miles Robinson, Joe Scally
  • Midfielders: Tyler Adams, Johnny Cardoso, Luca de la Torre, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Gio Reyna, Malik Tillman
  • Advanced: Brenden Aaronson, Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi, Christian Pulisic, Josh Sargent, Tim Weah, Haji Wright

The final list contains few surprises, as Tillman has had the fewest caps of any player on the training squad. Berhalter’s final selections offer a vote of confidence in Tyler Adams and Josh Sargent, both of whom have battled injuries in recent months. Adams’ playing time is being managed carefully after spending around a year on the sidelines with a hamstring problem, playing just 214 minutes for club and country since March 13. His 14-minute cameo in the USMNT’s 1-1 draw with Brazil on Wednesday, however, suggests he could play a notable role in the team’s Copa América campaign.

As for Sargent, he is looking for his first minutes for the national team since starting the USMNT’s 1-0 group stage victory over Iran during the 2022 World Cup. Like Adams, injuries have stood in his way – most recently, he missed the Concacaf Nations League finals in March with an ankle problem and did not play in any of the USMNT friendlies this month due to a foot injury.

Both players have the opportunity to change the lineup depending on their physical condition. Adams was one of the USMNT’s standout performers at the 2022 World Cup and it appears a starting midfield spot has been waiting for him ever since, largely because Berhalter has yet to find a balance in midfield without Adams. The head coach has alternated between Yunus Musah and Johnny Cardoso in this month’s friendlies, partnering Weston McKennie and Gio Reyna, but neither appears to have overtaken Adams in the pecking order and it still appears to be a dispute over which. both Berhalter prefers if Adams can’t play.

Things are less certain at the top, where Sargent could become one of the main candidates for a starting role alongside wingers Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah. Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi are off to a split start in pre-World Cup friendlies, but neither is coming off a particularly impressive season. Balogun scored eight goals for Monaco last season, while Pepi scored nine times for PSV. Sargent, meanwhile, had a 16-goal season for Norwich and has earned the right to be in the conversation, so his long-awaited return to the national team could carry very high stakes.

The USMNT begins its Copa América campaign on June 23, when it faces Bolivia at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, a suburb of Dallas.

All eyes on Germany as the Euros begin

Germany kicks off the summer of international football on Friday when the hosts play their opening Euro match against Scotland.

It has been a tortuous road to opening day for the hosts, who are just a decade away from winning the World Cup but now feel like a team in desperate need of redemption. A quick look at their recent record in international tournaments shows their downward trajectory in recent years – consecutive exits from the group stage at the World Cup and elimination in the round of 16 at the pandemic-delayed Euro 2020. The malaise led the German Football Association to fire Hansi Flick in September – the first time it has fired the coach of the German men’s national team – and hire Julian Nagelsmann to steady the ship.

So far, Nagelsmann’s experiment has paid off. Germany have lost once in eight games since he took over, most impressively beating France and the Netherlands in consecutive friendlies in March. Those were the first matches after Nagelsmann convinced World Cup winner Toni Kroos, coming out of international retirement, and Nigel Reo-Coker highlighted his importance to a talented – if unbalanced – German midfield.

  • Reo-Coker: “I think the most important thing is for Toni Kroos to return to that team. He’s been such a great and impactful player and when you have Toni Kroos in the form he’s playing in now… he’s the biggest difference in that team. [Ilkay] Gundogan is a bit of a problem as they are still trying to find him to fit perfectly into this system. Florian Wirtz, fantastic player, as we all know. [Jamal] Musiala, for me, will be the protagonist. For me, he will be the young player of this tournament. “

The last few months offer optimism for Germany, which is likely aiming to win the Euros for the first time since 1996 and enter the competitions with the third-best odds of winning it all. The group stage schedule against Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland is likely to provide only a few obstacles, but there will be no shortage of talented teams at the Euros this summer. The big question for the hosts is whether they will actually be able to correct course and put a difficult chapter behind them, or whether the crisis will continue for a few more years.

Best Bets

  • 20 euros24: Germany v Scotland, Friday, 3pm
THE PICK: Kai Havertz will score (+135) – After an impressive season at Arsenal, Kai Havertz returns to the Euros as Germany’s main striker. We’re counting on him to score as the hosts look to build a strong run and there’s no better time to open their goalscoring account than on Matchday 1, when Germany are hot favorites to start the campaign with a win over Scotland.
  • Euro 2024: Serbia x England, Sunday, 3pm
  • THE PICK: England will win 2-0 (+600) – England begin their campaign on Sunday and hope to demonstrate why they are favorites for the tournament with a victory over Serbia. As long as Harry Kane is fit and on the field, you can always count on England to score goals, but considering they are in Germany with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer, the Three Lions should have no problem scoring regardless of team.
