Hungary and Switzerland begin their UEFA EURO 2024 campaign at the Cologne Stadium, in the first round of Group A matches. Having performed well in the tournament in 2016 (reaching the knockout stage) and in a difficult Euro 2020 group, Hungary will be looking to start their latest campaign with a first win in 26 years over Switzerland, who reached the last eight for the first time at Euro 2020. A group
Germany and Scotland complete Group A and will play the opening match of the tournament on Friday, June 14. This is Hungary’s fifth participation in the Euros. After spending 44 years without qualifying between 1972, when they finished fourth, and 2016, Hungary reached their third consecutive tournament. At Euro 2020, Hungary failed to make it out of the group, finishing fourth in Group F, despite draws with France (1-1) and Germany (2-2). They lost 3-0 to champions Portugal in their opening game.
The Swiss made their debut at the Euro 96 finals and have qualified five more times since then: Euro 2024 is their fifth final in the last six editions of the tournament. Switzerland had its best performance at Euro 2020, advancing in third place in Group A, having finished level with Wales on four points, five behind Italy. They then stunned world champions France in the round of 16, winning 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw, before being eliminated by Spain in the round of 16, also on penalties, losing 3-1 after a 1-1 draw.
Team News
Hungary: Hungarian star Dominik Szoboszlai was sent off in the friendly against Israel with a minor hamstring problem, but the Liverpool midfielder is ready to start in an advanced role alongside Roland Sallai. Italian coach Marco Rossi is expected to use a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Adam Lang, Willi Orban and Attila Szalai lined up in central defense, protecting goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.
Possible Hungary XI: Gulacsi; Lang, Orbán, Szalai; Nego, A. Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Sallai; Vargas.
Switzerland: The likes of captain Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and Xherdan Shaqiri are expected to start, as is Burnley striker Zeki Amdouni, who has scored seven goals in 15 international appearances. Monaco duo Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria overcame injury problems to take part in team training this week but are not expected to start.
Possible Switzerland XI: Summer; Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Widmer, Freuler, Xhaka, Ndoye; Shaqiri, Vargas; Amdouni.
Prediction
They are two good teams, but I don’t expect them to win the first game of the tournament. Hungary should not be underestimated, taking into account their recent performances in this competition. Choice: Hungary 1, Switzerland 1.
