France enters Euro 2024 as favorites for the title and Didier Deschamps’ men open the tournament against Austria on Monday. Les Bleus fell short in 2020, having reached the final on home soil in 2016, and now the French will go again with superstar Kylian Mbappe leading the way as captain. However, Ralf Rangnick and his Austrian team are an obstacle and this inaugural meeting in Düsseldorf could set the tone for how complicated Group D could really be for France.

For now, Deschamps has not suffered injuries with the level of severity of all his opponents. Rangnick has been deprived of David Alaba, while Poland have now been without Robert Lewandowski for at least a game or two and Frenkie de Jong as well as Teun Koopmeiners are the Netherlands’ latest absences. Les Bleus, admittedly, are the only nation in world football that you would expect to deal with any injury crisis very well.

With the big clash with Oranje in Leipzig in the second game, before facing the Polish Eagles in Dortmund to close out Group D, the French cannot afford to slip up here. Austria has the potential to be a tough customer, but the pre-tournament is expected to displace Poland for third place. If they can get off to a solid start and perhaps avoid defeat, the pressure could be on whoever comes out worst in the second game.

Group D

One of the most attractive groups of this Euro features two European football powerhouses in France and the Netherlands. Two of world football’s leading producers of talent have been vying for top-five status in the UEFA coefficient in recent years, with Ligue 1 moving away from the Eredivisie last season. However, the French and Dutch face two tricky teams, with Ralf Rangnick’s Austria and Poland boasting some quality pieces despite their general inability to translate that appearance on paper into results on the pitch. Almost everyone expects Les Bleus and Oranje to progress as the top two here, but which potential order is still to be decided and both will know they cannot afford to slip up against either the Austrians or the Poles before they face each other in the second round of games.

Austria: With the exception of German duo Stefan Lainer – who is absent despite his 39 caps – and Xaver Schlager, with 43, Rangnick brought few surprises in his selections for the tournament squad. David Alaba is a big miss, but the Real Madrid player is still far from being in full form, which was expected. Otherwise, seven members of the team ply their trade in Austria at national level and experienced key men Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer are present with the Borussia Dortmund captain.

France: With only one enforced absence due to Lucas Hernandez’s injury, Deschamps had a virtually unhindered selection process that saw N’Golo Kante make a surprise return. This is the last call-up for Olivier Giroud, who will retire after the tournament, while Antoine Greizmann is the second most experienced player in this group. Mbappe is now captain and will return to the starting lineup after being rested for most of Canada’s draw, but his rust could be a point of concern for Deschamps. This is Mike Maignan’s first tournament as the undisputed number 1, while William Saliba hopes to start the tournament and become an opponent for Les Bleus.

Prediction

While a one-goal victory is not surprising, France should have plenty for Austria and will probably be able to get the job done quite comfortably. Expect Mbappe to hit the ground running with a goal or two as the French start as they intend to move forward. Choice: Austria 0, France 2.
