The Netherlands and France meet in Friday’s UEFA Euro 2024 heavyweight clash in Group D, with a place in the last 16 on the line in Leipzig. All the pre-game talk has been about Kylian Mbappe’s fitness after breaking his nose in the narrow victory over Austria as both sides secured maximum points in their opening games. Didier Deschamps’ men won 1-0, while Ronald Koeman’s team came from behind to beat Poland 2-1, with the two having met in the previous game.
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst canceled out Adam Buksa’s goal for Oranje, while Maximilian Wober’s own goal after a stunning move from Mbappe was enough for the French. The Dutch have also had injury problems, such as the loss of Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners just before the tournament, but there is still plenty of quality on both sides. A win for the Netherlands would guarantee a top two finish, having already scored more than France.
The two met in the qualifiers, with France winning 4-0 in Paris and 2-1 in Amsterdam thanks to Mbappé’s brilliance. Les Bleus could be deprived of that and their captain after his broken nose made him a doubt for Friday’s match. How Deschamps deals with this in attack will be critical, but if any nation has the strength in depth and quality to deal with it, it is the 2018 FIFA World Cup winners. Seven wins in eight games against the Netherlands is also a very good record to maintain in this match.

Group D
With France and the Netherlands on three points, a win for either team guarantees them a place in the round of 16. A draw won’t confirm that status here, but it would put both in a good position to advance and would undoubtedly serve them both well. A defeat for either is not disastrous as their final games are winnable, but both will be mindful of how close Poland and Austria were able to push their opponents in the opening games.

Team News
Netherlands: Brian Brobbey is training so Koeman should have a full squad to choose from, although Joey Veerman’s yellow card means a one-game ban could come into effect if he is booked again here. Weghorst could start, but Memphis Depay is still the most likely to lead the line for now.
Possible Netherlands XI: Verbruggen; Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake; Schouten, Veerman; Simons, Reijnders, Gakpo; Pay.
France: Mbappe’s fitness is a big topic in the French camp, with a protective mask required for the French superstar and captain to play in Germany. Deschamps is likely to choose Olivier Giroud, who played against Austria to make his seventh different international tournament appearance. Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni could be fit, but N’Golo Kante should retain the starting spot after an excellent performance in Dusseldorf.
Possible France XI: Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Upamecano, Hernandez; Kante, Rabiot; Dembélé, Griezmann, Thuram; Giroud.
Prediction
This is likely to be a highly possible draw, but Les Bleus generally tend to specialize in getting results when needed in major tournaments and that could be the case again here. Choice: Netherlands 0, France 1.
