The 2024 Copa América starts Thursday and runs until June 14 with the grand final scheduled for Miami. Argentina are the favorites and current champions, having won the last edition and the 2022 World Cup, while countries like Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia hope to dethrone Lionel Messi and company. The United States, meanwhile, will be hoping to impress and build momentum ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which they will host alongside Mexico and Canada.
It will be almost a month of intense action with a lot to prove from so many South American teams, especially those who want to show that they have not truly fallen, like Peru and Chile, aiming to recover their lost form.
Before the action begins, let’s take a look at our experts’ picks for the tournament:

Why Argentina will win the Copa América
They are expected to pick a team with Messi to win a championship, but Argentina are not a one-man team. They have talent on the field, such as established stars like striker Lautaro Martinez and defender Cristian Romero, as well as promising newcomers like Alejandro Garnacho and Valentin Carboni. Their recent success, combined with optimism for the future and the fuel to oust Messi on a high note in what could be his last major international tournament, should be more than enough to see them win the Copa América title for the 16th time. –Pardeep Cattry
Why Argentina won’t win the Copa América
Despite winning the last Copa América, Argentina will not be able to defend their title, which says more about how far football has come in South America since 2021. Coming up against an improved Uruguayan team, Marcelo Bielsa and Luis Suarez will deny Messi the chance of back-to-back matches, but this tournament is looking much better at the highest levels, with Uruguay, Colombia and Ecuador all heading in the right direction. -Chuck Booth
Why Vinicius Junior will win the Golden Boot
There are many top-class strikers who will challenge for the title, but it’s difficult to bet against Vinicius Junior these days. He is undeniably one of the best players at the moment, after a brilliant season at Real Madrid in which he scored 24 goals, including one in the UEFA Champions League final. Vinicius Junior is becoming a great player for his club and with the opportunity to do so for his country, it seems likely that he will find the moment once again. –Pardeep Cattry
Why Mexico will disappoint
Once the gold standard of North America, Mexico doesn’t have the same quality as it once did. Their malaise has translated into dismal results against a wide range of opponents, looking like the inferior team in defeats to Brazil, Uruguay, the USA and even Honduras in recent months. El Tri may be lucky in the Copa América draw, but there is little to suggest a young team will impress – and perhaps warning signs that they will not reach even the minimum markers of success as the countdown to a World Cup in House. –Pardeep Cattry
Why Venezuela will surprise
Surprisingly, Venezuela haven’t played since March, but that won’t stop them from making a good impression by beating Mexico and exiting the group. With one of the shortest players in the entire tournament, Yeferson Solteldo, playing alongside one of the most physical, Salomón Rondón, Venezuela may look like a created team, but with a strong defense and a supply line for Rondón, they will go to cause some inconvenience. — Chuck Booth
Why the USMNT will reach the quarterfinals
They have already been tested against CONMEBOL teams, embarrassed by Colombia (5-1 defeat) and resilient against Brazil (1-1 draw). As the current kings of the region, with few issues dominating other Concacaf rivals, they are also tournament hosts. They are finally a team with expectations and their destiny is truly in their hands, so it’s time to live up to the privilege of pressure. -Sandra Herrera
