The 2024 French Open will end this weekend, but there’s still plenty of action ahead. Mirra Andreeva is advancing to her first Grand Slam semifinal after defeating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday. At 17, she is now the youngest woman to reach a major semi-final since Martina Hingis in 1997.
Andreeva will face 12th-seeded Jasmine Paolini, who punched her ticket to the semi-finals with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Elena Rybakina. Although Andreeva is the main remaining dark horse, the favorite to win it all is also still competing. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek was nearly defeated by Naomi Osaka in the second round, but she used it as a wake-up call and had the shortest match of her career when she defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters final in just 40 minutes.
Swiatek has not lost at Roland Garros since the 2021 quarterfinals and is currently on a 19-match winning streak at the French Open. She also won 17 consecutive matches on clay, including title victories in Madrid and Rome. Swiatek is fresh off a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Marketa Vondrousova and will face American star Coco Gauff in the semifinals on Thursday.
Gauff advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-6 6-2 6-3 victory over Ons Jabeur on Tuesday. Gauff has never won the French Open, but reached the final round in 2022 – which, interestingly, he lost to Swiatek. Gauff, 20, won her first major last year at the US Open.
On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic withdrew of the tournament due to a knee injury, meaning he will still not win his 25th major title and will also lose the number one spot in the world rankings to Jannik Sinner. Sinner, 22, won his first Grand Slam title earlier this year at the Australian Open and will become the first Italian to be world No. 1.
“It’s definitely not how I wanted to become No. 1, with Novak retiring, but otherwise, in the last period I played very good tennis and I’m happy to be in the position,” he said. Sinner said. “It’s something new coming to me and something good, so I’m really happy.”
Sinner was dealing with a hip injury earlier this year, but has been taking care of business at Roland Garros and earned a trip to the semifinals after a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Grigor Dimitrov .
This tournament historically belongs to Rafael Nadal. However, the Spanish legend was eliminated early with a first round defeat to Alexander Zverev and may have played at Roland Garros for the last time. Spain would not be without a star, as 21-year-old Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz has come into his own. He is one of the favorites to win the French Open, but to reach the title match he will have to defeat Sinner in Friday’s semi-finals.
