Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey made history as the first women to headline a WrestleMania in 2019 alongside Charlotte Flair. They will forever be united by achievement, even if there is a discrepancy between their legacies. Rousey accomplished a lot during her five years with the company, but Lynch says the former UFC champion didn’t live up to unrealistic expectations.
Rousey made her in-ring debut at WrestleMania 34 in 2018, teaming with Kurt Angle in a victory against Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Rousey won her first world title with WWE later that year and enjoyed three additional titles before leaving WWE last year.
“She was coming from a different industry,” Lynch said. “MMA Time” on Wednesday. “She was a star and she should have been treated differently in terms of — I think she had such a good debut that everyone thought, ‘Oh, she can fight.’ I mean this respectfully, but she couldn’t fight.
“Everybody treated Ronda like she already knew this because when she came in she was good in that first match, but she was also working with Kurt Angle, she was working with Triple H, Stephanie McMahon. because everyone wanted her to succeed. And then it was, ‘OK, she can do this, let’s get to the races,’ and that was bad treatment for her because she was a star in her own right and had done a lot for MMA. ”
Lynch believes Rousey was unable to make up the ground required of her so quickly despite her athletic background. Rousey had a strong run in WWE, but being pushed to the top of the card was undoubtedly a lot of responsibility for a relative newcomer. On the other hand, Logan Paul has had an immaculate run in WWE, but generally follows the example of veteran performers ahead of him.
“What we do is not something where you can just have a good start and then, ‘OK, yeah, I’m off to the races.’ It’s a craft, and you have to learn your craft, and you have to be diligent about learning your craft,” Lynch said.
Rousey left WWE in 2023 and recently criticized the companyThe historically poor treatment of women in your book. Lynch applauded Rousey’s efforts in professional wrestling, but said it’s not an environment for anyone who isn’t fully dedicated to the dream.
“My experience came from no one thinking I was worth anything and becoming very valuable to the company and very valuable to wrestling in general, that’s why I loved it,” Lynch said. “Because I loved it and tried to do it.
“She came in and I think she found a place that she liked, she liked it, but she never looked to do that from a young age, and I think that changes the experience you have when you walk into a place.”
