washington – President Biden issued a statement in response to his son Hunter Biden being convicted of three felony gun possession charges in federal court on Tuesday, with the president saying he will accept the outcome of the case and that he loves his son.

The jury determined Hunter Biden illegally purchased and possessed a weapon while addicted to crack cocaine, violating federal law that prohibits illegal drug users from possessing firearms. The sentencing date has not yet been set.

“As I said last week, I am the president, but I am also a father,” said the president in his statement. “Jill and I love our son and are so proud of the man he is today. Many families who have had loved ones struggle with addiction understand the feeling of pride in seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery. As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal and I will always stand by Hunter and the rest of our family with our love. and support. Nothing will change that.”

Biden has generally declined to comment on the case, but has previously said he would accept the jury’s decision and will not grant forgiveness to the son. He did not specifically comment on whether he would commute any sentence his son might receive.

Hunter Biden issued his own statement following the verdict, expressing gratitude to his family and, in particular, his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden.

“I am more grateful today for the love and support I received from Melissa, my family, my friends and my community last week than I am disappointed with the outcome,” said Hunter Biden. “Recovery is possible by God’s grace, and I am blessed to experience this gift one day at a time.”

Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, said he is “naturally disappointed” with the verdict but respects the process and will “vigorously pursue all available legal challenges.”

The verdict was reached and read quickly on Tuesday, and first lady Jill Biden, who was present for most of the trial, did not return to the courtroom in time to hear the verdict read. She left the court hand in hand with Hunter Biden.

President Biden was at the White House when the jury delivered the verdict.

Other members of the Biden family were present at the trial to offer support, including the president’s brother, James. Hunter Biden’s daughter Naomi testified in court.

Hunter Biden was indicted on three felony weapons charges in September, following a proposed plea deal with federal prosecutors unraveled. He is scheduled to appear in California federal court to face separate tax charges in September. He pleaded not guilty in that case.
