Caitlin Clark and Zendaya are inspiring 2024 baby name trends


The name Caitlin peaked in popularity in 1988, but after more than three decades, it’s experiencing a resurgence — likely thanks to Caitlin Clark. Mid-year baby name trends show the WNBA star is not the only person who influences names, as well as other athletes, actors and movie characters, according to baby centerwhich analyzed naming trends over the last 20 years.

The name Caitlin has steadily declined in popularity since 2000 and hasn’t cracked the top 500 since 2014. But the name has nearly doubled in registrations so far this year, according to Baby Center.

When Caitlin Clark was born in 2002, the name was 123rd on the list. But after your record college basketball career and foray into professional sports, it appears the Indiana Fever point guard is helping Caitlin gain popularity. The name rose 1,599 positions on the list in 2024.

His last name is also growing in popularity, with the name Clark for boys emerging from a decline for the first time since 2015, according to BabyCenter.

In April, South Carolina won the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, and this year, its star Kamila Cardoso saw his first name rise 247 positions on the list, to 1,213.

Other names are also on the rise thanks to pop culture. The name Zendaya emerged this year and has been steadily rising since the release of “Dune: Part Two” in March. The actress’s name is at number 588. The last time her name increased was in 2021, after the release of “Dune: Part One”, and it continued to increase throughout 2022.

Zendaya plays a character called Chani in the fantasy franchise and that name has also seen an increase since the release of the second film – rising by 3,300 spots.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” – a youth book that became a TV series – also inspires names. The name Percy jumped 296 places on the list of boys’ names and 700 places on the list of girls’ names. His full name, Perseus, also rose 206 places on the boys’ list.

Other TV shows that have affected baby name trends: Historical dramas. The name Peggy has risen an impressive 4,934 places and BabyCenter attributes this to Denée Benton’s character in “Gilded Age.”

The siblings in “Bridgerton” may also have contributed to the rise in popularity of Anthony (up five spots), Eloise (up 20), Francesca (up 84) and Gregory (up 40) this year.

Names inspired by Eclipse are also trending. After April total solar eclipse, which could be seen by 31 million people in the US, stellar names like Aurora and Sunny gained popularity. And while the name Eclipse is rarer, it was classified for girls for the first time since 2021.
